Job Description

Johnson County Library is looking for Youth Services Librarian’s to guide a branch youth services team, to coordinate the promotion and enhancement of literacy for children birth to teen throughout the library system through an extensive knowledge of youth literature, age specific programming, and intentional outreach work. Programs and services developed should promote early literacy for age’s birth to six and 21st century skills for ages six to eighteen. Youth Services Librarians should be up to date on technology, able to instruct users of all ages in the use of the library’s technology resources including databases and e-products, and provide exceptional customer service in all interactions with the public. Essential duties include:

  • Provides back-up assistance in all departments of the library, including managing the building in the absence of a manager.

  • Works harmoniously with staff and maintain good public relations with users in the community.

  • Provides informational service to patrons, both in person and remotely; develops and maintains product knowledge regarding literature for specific age readers in order to promote literacy and meet informational needs of patron; instructs and assists with library resources, digital literacy and information requests; maintains a safe and comfortable library environment; upholds principles of intellectual freedom.

  • Provides and/or supports age-appropriate programs for patrons; ensures programs are marketed and evaluated effectively while using feedback to make improvements; develops and maintains relationships with community organizations and institutions; promotes system-wide programs, outreach and initiatives.

  • Participates in meetings, planning, and system-wide involvement; attends system-wide and staff meetings, and provides support and coverage for coworkers; participates in committees; understands and supports system-wide strategic objectives.

  • Creates spaces for patrons of all ages that promote creativity, critical thinking, and literacy; evaluates the collection to ensure it meets the needs of the community by collaborating with the Collections Department; merchandises the collection and ensures it is accessible, attractive, and balanced.

  • Collaborates with internal stakeholders to identify development opportunities; attends and looks for value in all trainings; learns and applies knowledge gained in training and development activities.

  • Establishes a cooperative approach to working with branch staff, coordinating programs and potential outreach; collaborates with youth and adult librarians at other branches to carry out strategic system wide initiatives; collaborates with library managers and coordinators to spend funds appropriately for programming and outreach.


Job Requirements

Master’s degree in Library Science, Education, Political Science or relevant field of study; three (3) years of experience using popular software programs with demonstrated ability to learn new technology; three (3) years of experience providing customer service in a library educational or public service environment; and a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.

Two (2) years of experience creating and presenting age appropriate programs or workshops is preferred.

Johnson County Government requires reference/background screening for all positions. Specified criteria may vary by Department/Agency.

Physical, Environmental, and Special Working Conditions:

  • Lifting (weight): 40 lbs.
  • Excessive standing and/walking: 25% of the time.
  • Shift work: Mornings, Afternoons, Evenings and Weekends.
  • All County employees may be called upon to assist other departments/agencies in a declared emergency situation.
