The Writing & Tutoring Center Instructor will develop and instruct writing courses at Stanford’s Online High School; serve a variety of roles within the Writing & Tutoring Center, including as a teacher, tutor, workshop leader, and curriculum developer; participate on an OHS committee, as a club supervisor, and in school-wide staff and instructor meetings, and contribute to Student Life events and activities.
**Please note that the Stanford Online High School and Stanford Pre-Collegiate Studies offices are located at the Stanford Redwood City Campus, however this position will be performed completely online and requires you to have the ability, technology, and appropriate tools to successfully teach courses online. You must be located within the United States of America.**
Your responsibilities include:- Teach multiple sections of writing labs, courses which meet once per week to support students’ work in writing-intensive OHS courses; maintain regular communications and check-ins with Instructors to ensure that writing lab curricula supports the reading, writing, and critical thinking skills required of the course.
- Prepare and lead general and course-specific writing workshops.
- In coordination with the Director of the Writing & Tutoring Center and OHS Instructors, develop new writing workshops and update existing writing workshops to ensure that they are interactive and make effective use of instructional technologies.
- In individual online tutoring sessions, provide effective directive and non-directive verbal and written feedback to 7th-12th grade students working across disciplines. Instructor’s tutoring schedule will include morning and evening times to account for the variety of time zones of OHS students.
- Maintain regular communication with OHS Instructors, Counselors, Administrators, and Parents regarding the progress of individual writing lab students; establish monthly check-ins with instructors of those courses linked to writing labs to ensure that the lab goals and curriculum are effectively aimed at developing the skills required of the parent course.
- Stay current in writing pedagogy theory and instructional technologies, especially those used by the OHS.
- Develop and teach a Summer@Stanford course or the annual summer College Essay Writing course.
- Serve on an OHS committee such as the Professional Development or Middle School Committee; attend committee meetings; develop and participate in committee-related events, activities, and professional development.
- Advise a student club, hosting weekly meetings and leading outreach and/or special club-related activities, especially as they support writing. Current writing instructors serve as advisors for various student publications.
- Other duties as assigned
To be successful in this position, you will bring:
- Master’s degree (or equivalent course work) in subject area relevant to that being taught by instructor. One year experience teaching at the high school/college level, or equivalent
- Facility with teaching traditional and online courses
- Proficiency using computer application
In addition, preferred requirements include:
- Experience tutoring students in writing within a high school or college level writing center
- Proficiency teaching digital portfolios
Physical Requirements:
- Frequently stand/walk, sit, perform desk-based computer tasks, and use a telephone.
- Frequently grasp lightly/fine manipulation.
- Occasionally twist/bend/stoop/squat, reach/work above shoulders, grasp forcefully, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds, writing by hand; occasionally sort/file paperwork.
- Rarely kneel/crawl.
- Must be able to conduct real-time voice-video seminars and spend 15-20 hours per week in front of a computer screen.
