Purpose of Position

This posting will be used to conduct ongoing recruitment and will remain open until position has been filled.

Why does the job exist?

To screen applicants to determine eligibility by assessing income, residency and nutritional risk. Provide nutrition education to participants at certification. Provide group facilitated nutrition education and information on healthy eating, health counseling, breastfeeding support, nutrition classes, cooking classes, referrals to healthcare providers and social services, and outreach activities.

How does it get done?

Maintain effective and efficient Women, Infants and Children Program operations in the Region by assessing nutritional risk, determining eligibility, and providing one-on-one and group nutrition education. Provide quality client services using constructs of Participant Centered Education as required by United States Department of Agriculture. Perform clerical duties such as filing, typing, data entry, word processing, and other computer software applications; operate photocopiers, fax machines, and other office equipment; and prepare mailings, answer phones, answer questions, deliver messages, and make appointments; electronic card inventory, archiving, vendor monitoring, supply and pharmacy orders and vehicle coordination. Assist Nutritionist Supervisor to increase community awareness and positive perception of the Public Health Division-Program by providing outreach in the community and interacting with other Public Health programs including participating in health fairs and developing nutrition education bulletin boards with approved messages.

Who are the customers?

Pregnant, Breastfeeding and Post-partum women, infants and children - up to the age of five (5) years who qualify to participate on the WIC Program.

Ideal Candidate

Fluent in both English and Spanish; experience in entering and retrieving data from multiple information systems including the New Mexico Women, Infants & Children Program Automated Data System; providing and/or coordinating direct nutrition services to clients including nutritional screening, assessment, planning, intervention, education, and evaluation based on program guidelines; client education and management of records; collaborating and coordinating with other organizations within the community; assisting in food and nutrition programs in the department of dietetics to meet nutritional requirements; counseling individuals and groups on basic rules of good nutrition, healthy eating habits, and nutrition monitoring to improve their quality of life.

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's Degree, from an accredited four-year institution, in Nutritional Sciences, Food Science, Community Nutrition, Clinical Nutrition, Human Nutrition, Dietetics, Public Health Nutrition, Family and Consumer Science, Home Economics, Health Education, Community Health, or Social Work, OR current status as a Registered Dietitian. Two (2) years of experience in WIC or other experience in food service, dietetics, or other health field that pertain to the job duties as listed. Nine hours of nutrition education, may substitute one (1) year experience. Substitutions may apply. Please refer to Substitution Table on the Job Posting.

Employment Requirements

Successful completion of CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvements Act) is required within 60 days of employment.
Blood-borne pathogen training will need to be completed within 30 days of employment.

Working Conditions

Executive Order 2021-046 requires all employees with the State of New Mexico to provide either proof of COVID-19 vaccination or proof of a COVID-19 viral test every week.

The Public Health Order (on Vaccination) dated August 17, 2021, requires Congregate Care Facility Workers and Hospital Workers to be fully vaccinated.

Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Lifting up to 50 pounds may be required. Potential exposure to communicable diseases. Services are provided in a clinic with diverse population, many who do not speak the English language. Monday through Friday, 8am-5pm. Travel to satellite offices, meetings, training sessions, and special events with the occasional overnight stay is required.
