Department Information

The Office of the Vice President for Research (VPR) at Indiana University is responsible for research development, research compliance, and research administration. Working with university-wide offices, campus leaders and deans, the Vice President for Research Office works to increase and diversify research and creative activities at IU, attract external funding for these activities, and develop public-private partnerships, technology transfer, graduate education and intercampus research opportunities.

Job Summary

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Serves as the lead videographer and editor for IU Research video production; conceptualizes, gathers, creates, edits, and prepares visual materials; conducts photo, video, and live event shoots for VPR as needed.
  • Develops brand and strategy-driven visual solutions for IU Research in concept development and strategic thinking for visual and audio products. Works with the research communications leadership along with additional staff and leadership on project ideas; links IU Research with overall IU branding and strategic goals.
  • Ensures that work is delivered on time and on budget. Anticipates and plans for the application of new tools and techniques and integrates these into processes and operations.
  • Establishes quality assurance (QA) processes. Catalogs content in useful system that allows for ease of use and searchability. Prepares, oversees, and manages timelines for multiple projects running simultaneously. Researches and prepares recommendations for appropriate equipment purchases.

General Responsibilities

  • Identifies basic, complex, special, and/or urgent videography projects for use in a variety of marketing and communications needs; sets timelines, determines desired video composition, performs necessary interviews and/or research, and selects and adjusts subjects, equipment, and lighting to achieve desired artistic effects.
  • Captures and edits video footage using various equipment and software including Adobe Creative Suite, adjusting to formatting specifications of marketing and communications project needs, audiences, and platforms; may delegate basic editing tasks to Videography Assistant(s).
  • Regularly consults with marketing and communications staff and other key stakeholders to determine project needs and ensure video elements align with strategy and objectives.
  • Maintains filming equipment, including editing lab equipment, lenses, lights, and cameras, inventory; performs basic and more complex equipment repairs.
  • Seeks input from peers and stakeholders on a variety of videography projects to evaluate effectiveness of different aesthetics, lighting, images, etc.
  • May provide organizational training on videography methodology and strategy.
  • May provide guidance to Videography Assistants or lower-level Videographers.
Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in video production, art, or a related field.

Preferred

  • Master's degree.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

  • 2 years in a relevant field.

Preferred

  • Experience in all aspects of video production, including concept creation, writing, production planning, videography, recording, editing and post-production processes demonstrated by portfolio of material with on-screen credits.
  • Proven record of innovating new processes in visual capture, especially in social media, a production studio, newsroom or agency.
  • Experience working within or implementing visual systems to deliver jobs on time and on budget, estimating creative video projects, while streamlining workflow.

Working Conditions / Demands

This role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. This role frequently requires the ability to handle equipment. This role frequently requires the ability to remain stationary and ascend/descend ladders/stairs. This role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds. The role requires the ability to detect items in close proximity as well as far away; discern between colors; detect objects in peripheral space of self; discern items in detail; and to have good depth perception.
