leads the Mass General Brigham system-wide commitment to improve the health and well-being of low-income and vulnerable populations. Mass General Brigham’s commitment to the community is part of a $30 million pledge to programs aimed at dismantling racism and other forms of inequity through a comprehensive combination of approaches involving our health care delivery system and community health programs.

The Vice President serves as a key leader of Community Health programming across the system and partners with the Chief Community Health Equity Officer to set strategy for and direct the implementation of the Community Health program across the MGB system. The VP will also execute key objectives to meet program goals. The Vice President is responsible for overseeing all Community Health program activities and personnel through direct and indirect reporting relationships.

The Vice President will lead the design and implementation of Mass General Brigham’s expanded strategy for integrated enterprise Community Health programs and is responsible for achieving measurable improvements for the health of area communities prioritized proportionate to need. These initiatives include programs dedicated to 1) community and civic engagement such as a robust Anchor Strategy, 2) community health improvement based on addressing key social determinants of health and implementing innovative community based clinical programs, 3) implementing a robust research program, and 4) developing a comprehensive training and education program for future leaders of community health. The overarching goal of all initiatives will be to demonstrate a reduction in health inequities and a measurable improvement in community health outcomes. Additionally, this role will provide critical leadership to large-scale MGB Community Health fundraising efforts.

The Vice President, Community Health will be responsible for evolving Mass General Brigham’s relationships with all communities, partnering with our hospitals to produce an evidence-based outcomes oriented strategy, balancing a portfolio of system-wide efforts with hospitals-identified, leading initiatives that benefit from economies of scale, and facilitating opportunities for research and training in the community. The Vice President will lead efforts to align Mass General Brigham’s United Against Racism work with community initiatives and ensure productive working relationships with community leaders and health centers.

Reporting to the Chief Community Health Equity Officer, the Vice President functions as a senior leader exhibiting strong and collaborative leadership, relationship building, communication, business operations, financial and analytical, and complex problem-solving skills to successfully develop and advance the system wide Community Health program.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • In partnership with the CCHEO, guide the priorities and implementation of precision community health for the enterprise, by executing and overseeing the strategic framework to ensure that objectives and goals are met, align with identified community health needs, reflect input of community representatives and align with objectives for equity-based care
  • Develop, prioritize, and direct strategic relationships and initiatives from across the enterprise, with community health centers proportional to need, ensuring investments meet community needs, support hospitals' ability to customize locally while maintaining benefit of economies of scale and align with MGB strategic objectives
  • Lead the United Against Racism (UAR) workstreams focused on Community Health including:
  • Lead the system-wide implementation of a community-based clinical service line, assisting with prioritizing communities and their clinical needs, exploring the health services to meet those needs, designing the delivery modes; implementing the programs and monitoring outcomes
  • Launching a Food Pantry initiative to provide a structured pathway for addressing food insecurity amongst MGB patients and those in the communities we serve
  • Working on new clinical text messaging programs to communicate with MGB patients and community members to bring down barriers to accessing our services
  • Lead Community Health programs system-wide to address social determinants of health and prioritizes program investments including food insecurity, housing stability, and behavioral health. to create community health improvement plans
  • Oversee the development, completion, and communication of an MGB community health needs assessment to inform planning and investment in community health programs
  • Play a key role in large scale Community Health fundraising efforts to support the Community Health strategy and related programs
  • Guide the development of enterprise governance for community health annual goals
  • Lead Mass General Brigham health messaging to diverse communities
  • Lead Mass General Brigham community health advocacy and policy work, determination of need assessments and development of federal and state reporting relative to full suite of Mass General Brigham community health initiatives
  • Guide the development of metrics and enterprise analytics and reporting to generate insights for interventions and evaluate program impact and success
  • Support Mass General Brigham’s new community health research program, under the guidance of the CCHEO and with the office of the Chief Academic Officer
  • Under the guidance of the CCHEO and in coordination with Chief Academic Office, hospital leadership and Human Resources, create a training and education pathway to prepare future leaders in community health.
  • Serve as a representative of the CCHEO as needed, including internal and external trustee and board meetings

Working Conditions

  • General day hours with flexibility to meet the demands of the position (e.g., some early morning or late evening meetings)
  • Standard business environment with frequent local travel between Mass General Brigham Healthcare System sites
  • May require travel for external training and system wide collaboration

Supervisory Experience

Day to day responsibility directly for 14+ staff and dotted line accountability for embedded staff.

Fiscal Responsibility

  • Management of multi-million-dollar budget
  • Support substantial fundraising efforts and spending annually

Required

  • Exceptional leader with track record of success
  • Master’s degree required, with 10+ years’ experience in community health or related field demonstrating progressive policy expertise, and leadership and management responsibility.
  • In-depth knowledge of community health center operations and knowledge of centers and leadership in Mass General Brigham service area
  • Proven understanding of community health issues
  • Collaboration and Influence: Ability to interact thoughtfully with a wide variety of constituents at all organization levels, including hospital leadership and senior management, and use data and professionalism to persuade peers and senior leaders to create change
  • Project Management: Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and capable of working autonomously. Ability to set priorities and vision, manage multiple tasks and projects, set and meet deadlines.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including grant writing and comfort presenting and speaking to large groups.
  • Strong conceptual and analytic abilities, including quantitative skills.
  • Strategic Thinking and Facilitation: ability to think about strategic problems, generate and present options, and facilitate consensus and decision-making among constituent clinical, operational, and/or executive leadership. Ability to set priorities, coordinate multiple tasks, set and meet deadlines.
  • Strong visualization skills, including developing PowerPoint presentations and programmatic scoring algorithms, clinical and financial performance summaries, and analytics findings.
  • High degree of initiative and a passion for educating and sharing knowledge, as well as an openness to learning new concepts, tools and sources of information.
  • Strong PC / Microsoft application skills including Word, Advanced Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Experience with SQL and Tableau or other data visualization software preferred.
  • Profit and Loss management.

Preferred

  • Experience in concepts of community health, clinical healthcare equity, quality improvement, healthcare consulting, policy analysis, or quality/financial data analysis and reporting.
  • Experience in clinical project management and clinical operations, consulting or clinical/financial data analysis.
