Job Description

The Vice President of Accounting will oversee all day-to-day accounting activities of PIH Health (which includes three acute care hospitals, a physician foundation organization, home health, hospice, and several other operating companies (including management company, malpractice insurance captive, physician management services organization, and a charitable foundation). Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, accounting, payroll and financial/regulatory reporting and research (internal and external), oversight of annual audit, oversight and development of internal controls and procedures, treasury management, debt portfolio management, tax compliance and Form 990 preparation, and various other financial analyses. In addition, continue to enhance the department through hiring strong accounting professionals and training/developing/mentoring the existing staff.


The individual will work closely with the System CFO and management team to optimize the enterprise’s fiscal operating results and provide leadership for the development and implementation of plans and programs related to finance, reimbursement, while collaborating with colleagues responsible for supply chain and revenue cycle functions.


Required Skills
  • The individual will have contemporary and well-rounded financial expertise including in-depth understanding of health care finance and accounting and the nuances of the financial function within a diverse integrated, health care system. This should include understanding of complex accounting and financial reporting, revenue cycle, cash management, contracts, internal controls, hospital and physician reimbursement practices and regulations, capital financing and construction, and tax compliance.
  • Strong working knowledge of federal and state regulations pertaining to the healthcare industry.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of internal controls and risk assessment. Proven ability to work collaboratively with internal audit, compliance and external auditors.
  • Excellent understanding of management information systems and have a track record of success in working collaboratively with the IT function and utilizing effectively data and information for management decision making.
  • Superior ability to analyze financial data and report, discuss, and present in a clear way with various parties, including auditors, Board of Directors, management, and employees.
  • Ability to enhance and expand PIH Health’s financial reporting system.
  • Skilled in research, interpretation, and preparation of memoranda on accounting pronouncements.
  • A strong, confident, participative, and decisive leader and manager with the ability to build consensus and collaborate effectively across the entire organization. Proven ability to inspire and energize staff for high performance and lead through industry and organizational changes. Develops positive employee relationships and has excellent teambuilding, recruiting, coaching, and mentoring skills. Able to communicate expectations and hold staff accountable.
  • A skilled change agent with sensitivity to the interpersonal, organizational, and political issues which accompanies change.

Required Experience
  • A minimum of ten years of progressive accounting and financial management experience with a strong record of achievement in a sophisticated, progressive, and complex health care organization.
  • Most likely, the individual will be in a director of finance, or controller position within a hospital/health system. Candidates coming directly from a public accounting/consulting firm who have worked with hospitals/health systems will also be considered.
  • Experience in an integrated delivery network in a highly competitive, advanced managed care market is strongly desirable. Familiar with risk contracting & reporting.
  • Preferred: Background in capital structure analytics and understanding of debt issuance process, and experience with Allscripts suite of finance and accounting products.

Education/Certification


  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business, administration, or related major.

  • Certification as a CPA with a minimum of five years major public accounting work experience preferred.
