Yakima Valley College seeks an innovative full-time Veterinary Technology Instructor who is active and accomplished in their discipline, who has a record of successful industry experience and/or related teaching experience, and who is committed to community college students and their success. This is a full-time, special faculty (non-tenure track) position on a 9-month academic schedule from September through June, with an anticipated start of September 2021.

Reporting to the Dean of Workforce Education, the Veterinary Technology Instructor will have successful industry experience, must be able to develop equity-minded practices within an education environment, and demonstrates the strong promise of becoming a contributing member of the Workforce Education Division.

Essential Tasks

  • Teach a variety of veterinary technology courses, including didactic/lecture and laboratories
  • Oversee student instruction/learning and staff in performing effective and safe small animal anesthesia, restraints, medical and surgical procedures
  • Support and prepare a diverse population of students for employment within the veterinary field
  • Work with Vet Tech team to develop budget strategies, update equipment, schedule coursework, and meet all accreditation and USDA standards for the Program
  • Develop and apply curriculum to meet Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities (CVTEA) accreditation standards and processes, including development and application of essential skills criteria
  • Ensure compliance with USDA and other legal requirements for animals used in teaching, including husbandry and care, facility standards, and medical records
  • Participate in the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and develop the implementation of those protocols
  • Utilize Veterinary Technician Practice Model including technician assessments, technician interventions, and medical records
  • Utilize Canvas as our Online Learning Management System for coursework
  • Advocate for lab safety at all times; maintain a safe learning environment for students, patients, and instructors
  • Prepare and instruct in labs for small animals, pocket pets, exotics, avian, equine, and bovine species
  • Lead efforts to increase student success in Veterinary Technology, including closing achievement gaps between demographic groups
  • Build relationships in Veterinary Technology settings that result in high-quality partnerships and co-op/internship placements
  • Engage in assessment activities to meet the requirements of the College, program, and course-level student evaluation
  • Participate in student advising, Guided Pathways advising model, campus committee work, course and curriculum planning, department meetings
  • Teach alternate hours, as needed for special circumstances

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE OF:


  • Anesthesia, surgery, and dentistry in dogs and cats
  • Clinical laboratory procedures including cytology, hematology, microbiology, parasitology, urinalysis.
  • Equine nursing and common clinical procedures
  • Pharmacology
  • Management, husbandry, and medical care of dogs, cats, and exotics in a hospital or shelter setting
  • Microsoft Office suite, especially Word and PowerPoint
  • Adult teaching and learning models and practices
  • Responsive customer service for a culturally diverse population
ABILITY TO:
  • Evaluate animal behavior and medical status to provide for the patient, student, and staff safety
  • Assess student learning and skill acquisition utilizing established criteria
  • Communicate knowledge and skill effectively in both written and oral form with students and the instructional team
  • Learn the technology utilized by the college including Microsoft Outlook, Canvas, Panopto video recording, and various video-conferencing applications
  • Occasionally travel to various offsite advisory board meetings or other locations as required
  • Be willing to work a flexible schedule as needed for special circumstances. The typical schedule is M-F during the day.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to perform skills and evaluations of patients and students required of the position, which includes fine motor skills, manual dexterity, ability to lift and position patients, and vision (with or without correction) to see depth, color, fine details through microscopes, etc

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor of Science in Veterinary Technology, or AAS in Veterinary Technology, and a Bachelor's Degree in a related field such as Biology, Animal Science, or Education from a regionally accredited college or university
  • Three (3) years experience in a veterinary clinical setting working as a veterinarian or veterinary technician
  • Eligibility for professional licensure (DVM or LVT) in the State of Washington (must obtain licensure within 3 months of employment. Must maintain licensure required of the position)
  • Eligibility for professional technical certification in the State of Washington
  • Demonstrated ability to implement curriculum and deliver instruction in multiple modes of instruction (online, hybrid, and face-to-face) in didactic and laboratory settings

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • DVM/VMD degree from a regionally accredited college or university
  • Demonstrated 2 years’ experience in Veterinary Technology education or supervision and evaluation of students in practicum/externship setting in clinical practice.
  • Veterinary technicians must be a graduate of an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) or Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) accredited veterinary technology program
  • Ability to perform the skills and evaluations of patients and students required of the position
  • 5 years of full-time experience in a clinical setting working with dogs, cats, and horses
