This posting is for a surgical veterinary technician. Hours are 7:00am-5pm Monday through Friday, rotation with on-call schedule as well. Please do not apply to this posting if you cannot work these shifts.
Will work collaboratively with Emergency and Internal Medicine Departments, no separation amongst them.

The veterinary technician is the doctor’s primary medical support person. They begin the examination procedure and continue to assist the doctor throughout the examination, diagnosis and treatment phases. They aid the doctors in achieving greater efficiency by relieving them of technical work and administrative detail. They have a very significant role in communicating and caring for the client.
Physical Requirements
- Come to work free from any mood altering or intoxicating substances.
- Shared lifting and restraint of up to 200 pounds from floor to table height.
- Excessive walking and standing; frequent squatting and kneeling.
- Incur risk of injury from animals. May be exposed to bites, scratches and contagious diseases.

Expectations
- Work as scheduled and will be expected to be available nights, weekends, and holidays. Find a replacement should special circumstances or illnesses occur.

Duties & Responsibilities
- Performs emergency procedures such as control of bleeding, resuscitation with oxygen, opening airways, and external cardiac massage.
- Understands usage and dosage for all prescription drugs and can readily explain them to the clients.
- Work with the veterinary team and fellow technicians to complete required training in a manner that promotes a comprehensive understanding of procedures and physiology.
- Assist in animal restraint as directed.
- Assist in patient receiving/exams, in-house consults and coordinate diagnostics and/or procedures as indicated.
- Admits and discharges patients on the doctor's orders, ensuring that patients are well groomed and in a medically appropriate state.
- Counsels clients on various aspects of animal care; explains dosage/purpose of medications; reinforces the proper care and procedures that should be followed at home.
- Maintain all anesthetic patient records (i.e. anesthesia log, entering charges, treatments, procedural notes, discharge instructions, medical plans, etc.)
- Run lab work (PCV, TPP, IDEXX lab machines, etc.)
- Performs clinical laboratory procedures such as fecal flotation exams, heartworm checks, skin scrapings, urinalysis, and fungal cultures; draws blood for laboratory analysis; maintains file of lab test results and ensures that test results are recorded in patient records.
- Takes radiographs and administer EKGs and EEGs.
- Be able to perform complicated mathematical calculations.
- Have a complete understanding of the anesthesia machine function, set-up and trouble-shooting.
- Be able to perform pre-anesthetic assessments, injections, induce anesthesia, intubation, monitoring, and recovery.
- Understand and ensure sterility at all times.
- Recover patients appropriately, notifying the DVM of any patients status changes or concerns.
- Ensure all requested treatments are performed in a timely manner and communicated to the ICU/ER team.
- Demonstrate ability to efficiently and correctly use the practice management software to enter medical notes and charges.
- Ensuring all anesthesia specific supplies are well stocked available when needed.
- Record all controlled drugs appropriately following DEA guidelines. List needed inventory items on want list before the last one is taken, unpack orders using hospital packing slip procedures, stock shelves, monitor for expiration dates and redundant items.
- Provide superior anesthetic assistance to all specialty departments as assigned to maintain high quality patient care.
- Perform surgical assistance as a sterile or non-sterile technician by the direction of the surgeon as requested.
- Know the location of all MSDSs, accident and injury log, self aid kit and emergency phone numbers.
Client Service
- Customer service oriented.
- Assist the client in bringing the animal into the clinic when necessary.
- Maintain a positive, professional attitude with the clients and referring veterinary community at all times.
- Provide clients with the necessary resources to maintain optimum customer service.
- Work closely and professionally with other technicians and doctors on cross-department cases.
Housekeeping
- Keep treatment/surgery/exam rooms clean and sanitary. Keep lab equipment well maintained, be sure cages are cleaned on all surfaces, counters, refrigerators, bathrooms, floors and general environment are kept up to hospital standards. The surgery suite is to be kept extremely sanitary and closed – all surfaces disinfected and supplies and crash cart kept stocked with updated non expired supplies. Be prepared to perform routine kennel duties including walking, feeding, medicating, scrubbing, mopping, laundry and bathing.
