Job Description

We are looking for a Veterinary Assistant to support our Veterinarians and help run day to day tasks at our Clinic. We are a fast-paced, high volume, mixed animal practice with more then 40 years in business. You’ll play an important role ensuring the smooth running of our facility. We’ll rely on you to assist the Veterinarian in examinations and operations, but also readiness to care for injured or scared animals that might occasionally lash out. Candidates must be able to multi task, possess a sense of humor, be reliable, professional, self motivated and be invested in continuing education.

A candidate must be able to triage, gather relevant medical history, keep accurate, detailed medical records, schedule appointments in a timely manner and efficiently handle phone messages pertaining to progress reports, prescription refills and consultations. Basic computer skills are needed, inputting clients and pets into the computer system, billing, and medication refills.

Part time or full time positions available. We are willing to do on the job training, but you must have a basic understanding of the veterinary profession and physiology. Pay is hourly and is based on skill set and experience, $12 to $20 per hour paid weekly. Health insurance stipend after 6 months. Five days paid vacation after one year and ten days after two years.

Responsibilities

  • Safe and secure animal restraint
  • Clean cages and equipment / tools
  • Sterilize equipment and clean examination tables and rooms
  • Restocking and cleaning the building at the end of the day
  • Restrain animals during examinations or vaccinations
  • Observe animal behavior or health condition and report to the Vet
  • Help in cases of emergencies
  • Handle administrative duties such as scheduling appointments or calling patients in the examination room by priority
  • Keep accurate records and logs
  • Assist Doctors with procedures and surgeries
  • Advise pet owners on basic healthcare, heartworm and flea & tick prevention
  • Submission of samples to outside labs including forms, packaging, and shipping labels
  • Run in house testing of blood, urine and stool
  • Packing, sterilizing surgical packs

Skills

  • Proven experience as a Veterinary Assistant or similar position working with animals is a plus
  • Experience in an administrative role is a plus
  • Current or former pet ownership is an advantage
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Have a working knowledge of basic husbandry
  • Must be able to lift at least 50# from the floor
  • Ability to follow instructions properly
  • Comfortable being around animals (cats, dogs, birds, reptiles etc.)
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the job
  • Availability to occasionally work in emergencies
  • High school diploma; a certificate from a Veterinary Assistant program is a plus

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time

Pay: $12.00 - $20.00 per hour

Schedule:

  • 12 hour shift

COVID-19 considerations:
Curbside is available, masks are optional, cleaning between clients and pets and well as the whole building each night.
