Description:
This position assists mechanics in performing maintenance and repairs on buses, service vehicles and equipment.
This position is considered safety-sensitive and subject to the provisions of the Substance Abuse Program Policy for Safety Sensitive Positions.
Essential Functions:
- Performs entry-level routine maintenance and repairs on all systems and safety equipment on buses and service vehicles for safe operation.
- Greases and lubricates buses and service vehicles and equipment; performs routine repair work.
- Helps mechanics perform maintenance and repairs such as tune-ups and oil-changes, checks tires and brakes, replaces spark plugs and engages in other similar tasks.
- Assists mechanics with electrical systems such as replacing batteries, starters, and lights.
- Repairs or replaces defective parts or make changes as instructed.
- Performs some preventive maintenance and troubleshooting inspections to determine need for repairs.
- Maintains records of work performed.
- Performs other duties as may be required or assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- High School diploma or GED plus one year of experience in the routine maintenance and repair of automotive or heavy equipment; or an equivalent combination of related education, training, and experience.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver’s License and safe driving record. Must obtain Florida Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class “B” with a “P” (Passenger) endorsement and airbrakes (required) for promotion to a Technician “A”, “B”, or “C” position.
- Must provide adequate tools to perform mechanic’s duties as required.
Desired Qualifications:
- Graduation from a diesel or mechanical technical school preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
- Knowledge of vehicle operation and basic vehicle maintenance repair.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
- Skilled in reading fuel/oil measuring devices.
- Skills and ability to read and write legibly; use basic math; and determine time of day or night.
- Ability to follow established safety practices.
- Ability to complete Work Orders, Fuel Cards and/or other required paperwork or electronic data entry forms.
- Ability to read, understand and interpret operations and service manuals.
- Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
- Ability to effectively communicate in English, both orally and in writing.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with those encountered in the course of work using principles of excellent customer service.
- Ability to exhibit a professional, courteous demeanor.
- Ability to work in a diverse environment.
Work Environment and Special Considerations:
- Will be available to work days, nights, weekends and holidays.
- The functions of this position are primarily performed outdoors under varying weather conditions with exposure to various fuels and other chemical agents.
- Must be able to work with commercial cleaners and toxic materials.
- Requires the stamina and ability to stand and fuel vehicles in all weather conditions; bend, stoop, walk, run, scrub, push, stretch, kneel and lift 50 lbs.
- Requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing, speaking and color perception; dexterity in operating equipment.
- Incumbent is eligible for participation in the Bloodborne Pathogen Program.
- LYNX provides the community with much needed public transportation, and it is important for the Agency to resume its services as quickly and as safely as possible in the event of any natural, technological, or human-caused emergency or disaster. This position is considered a mission critical member of LYNX’s emergency preparation and response efforts during an emergency or disaster and as such, may be asked to work during these emergencies or disasters.
