Job Description

Sidwell Friends, a coeducational Quaker day school with campuses in Washington, DC, and Bethesda, MD, seeks a full-time teacher for the 2021-2022 school year in the Upper School History Department to fill the Señora Guillermina Medrano de Supervia Endowed Faculty Chair for Spanish and Latin American Studies.

The Señora Guillermina Medrano de Supervia Faculty Chair will have the following responsibilities:

  • Courses taught may include History of Latin America and Spanish language and literature courses, depending on the area of expertise of the candidate.
  • Serve as a resource for faculty and staff seeking to develop academic courses and enrichment programs, including minimester and summer programs, relating to the study of Spanish and Latin American history, language, and culture.
  • Sit as a member on the All-School Equity, Justice, and Community team.
  • Consult with the Director of Equity, Justice, and Community and the Divisional Principals to create appropriate programming across the divisions for the observance of National Hispanic Heritage Month and other relevant celebrations and observations.
  • Advise, as appropriate, student affinity groups.

Applicants must possess a graduate degree in History, Spanish Language Studies, Latin American Studies or a related field and teaching experience, preferably at the high school level. A deep understanding of Spanish and Latin American history and culture is required, as well as fluency in Spanish. The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate an ability to inspire and support students and will show a willingness to work collaboratively and independently in an environment committed to academic excellence, equity, justice, service, and students’ social emotional wellness. An appreciation for adolescents and a sense of humor are also essential.

The most desirable candidates will also be able to demonstrate proficiency using digital and online platforms for remote instruction as well as proven effectiveness as a classroom teacher in a brick-and-mortar setting. Teaching positions at Sidwell Friends School are campus-based; therefore, this position requires teaching in person.
