Job Description

Great Oaks Legacy Charter School is seeking a Tutorial Curriculum Director - Math for the 2021-22 school year.

The Great Oaks Legacy Charter School is a high-performing, innovative charter public school in Newark NJ, serving students from Pre-K to 12th grade on campuses across the city of Newark. Our mission is to prepare Newark's students for success in college and beyond. Currently, the historical college matriculation rate for GOLCS is 79% - nearly twice the national average for economically underrepresented students.

We accomplish our mission by:

  • Cultivating an environment where all students and staff are known and valued and are provided the support and compassion they need to be successful.
  • Delivering individualized academic support to our students daily, through tutoring provided by AmeriCorps Education Fellowship program.
  • Pairing rigorous curriculum and teaching with intense personal support and high academic expectations for students. Our students, for example, are encouraged to take multiple AP classes before they graduate high school. Our alumni receive intensive support from our college counseling team, while in college.

ROLE DESCRIPTION

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


Tutorial Curriculum Management


  • Drives academic results by designing and managing the alignment of the Math tutorial curriculum for grades 3 through 8.
  • Implements measures for quality control and analyzes the effectiveness of Math tutorial
  • Submits a weekly report for grades 3-8 to demonstrate student performance and recommendations for tutorial pacing
  • Ensures the Math tutorial curriculum is aligned to the instructional pacing calendar for grades 3-8
  • Analyzes bi-weekly assessment data and other benchmark assessments for grades 3 through 8 to identify spiral standards, misconceptions and targets for Professional Development

Training & Development:


  • Manages the year-long PD calendar for Math Fellows
  • Facilitates weekly Math content sessions with each grade level to discuss instructional strategies, misconceptions and planning
  • Holds office hours and small group coaching sessions for Fellows who need additional support with delivery of instruction and content knowledge
  • Collaborates with the Chief Corps Officer to plan and facilitate professional development for new Fellows aligned to grade level instructional strategies for Math
  • Collaborates with the Elementary and Middle School Math departments to facilitate professional development for Math teachers to ensure the Teacher Fellow Connection (TFC) model is effectively implemented.
  • Supports the administration of the Math placement exam for Fellows and the final campus placement
  • Supports the Elementary and Middle schools with implementing Math intervention for students

Administration


  • Works with Chief Corps Officer and Corps Managers to track student growth, analyze assessments and support with identifying next steps for PD, student groups and tutorial.
  • Conducts tutorial observation to evaluate the execution of instructional strategies
  • Conducts weekly audits of TFC to support math Teachers and ensure execution is aligned to the TFC guide
  • Collaborates with Instructional Leaders and School Directors to monitor the bi-weekly assessment calendar
  • Collaborates with the Math Instructional Leaders to track performance on priority standards from the bi-weekly and benchmark assessments
  • In collaboration with the Chief Corps Officer, codifies and implements processes for the student data review, Teacher-Fellow Connection (TFCs) curriculum meetings, and other tutorial initiatives.
  • Coaches Corps Managers to promote a data driven instruction (DDI) culture, including the tracking of tutorial observations and feedback sessions

  • Demonstrate ability to respond well to and implement feedback immediately

Required Skills/Qualifications:

  • A strong academic record, including a bachelor's degree from a competitive college or university
  • Excellent planning, leadership, management, and communication skills, with a proven ability to project manage
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills;
  • Excellent organizational skills and follow through.
  • Superb self-management skills and ability to multi-task; have strong planning and execution skills; Successful experience managing, supervising or professionally coaching young professionals preferably in an urban school or service setting such as at City Year, Teach for America or another AmeriCorps program
  • Exceptional relationship building skills and the ability to provide clear consistent and firm feedback in a positive manner.
  • At least two years of experience working with youth in an urban, academic setting, preferably having completed at least one year of service in an AmeriCorps or similar program.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP & EVALUATION


The Tutorial Curriculum Director – Math is a full time, year-round (12-month) network-level role and reports to the Chief Corps Officer, receiving semi-annual evaluations.
