Compensation:

  • Hourly Pay: $ 25.05

Hired at $25.05/ hour during paid training. Training academy will consist of 23 weeks of rigorous training; this training will be both physically and mentally challenging. Upon graduation the rate of pay will be increased to $27.61/ hour. After graduation you will begin 16 weeks of field training with a veteran Trooper. The rate of pay will follow the Career Progression Plan based on years in service while employed with the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Applicants with tattoos, scarifications, and/or brands that are visible or partially visible when wearing a short-sleeved shirt, will be required to wear the Class B (long sleeved shirt) while in on-duty status.

Position Summary & Responsibilities:

Training Academy: During the Training Academy, you will receive intensive classroom and practical law enforcement training. You will manage your personal and study time in order to complete assigned projects. You must take and maintain notes and handout materials. You will participate in small group and team exercises. You must practice good judgement and problem-solving skills, using information presented, policy and procedure guidance, and present acceptable solutions and/or reactions.
You will receive intensive physical fitness training. You will cultivate an understanding of the importance of physical fitness. You will complete multiple physical assessments throughout the Academy, including: aerobic capacity test, by running 1.5 miles as quickly as possible; three dynamic strength tests, by doing as many sit-ups, push-ups, and pull-ups as possible in two minutes; following a strict protocol. You will display improvement in physical performance over the course of academy training.
Physical demands are considerable. There is a high degree of physical exertion. Serious injury is possible. There is exposure to all weather conditions requiring certain gear. Mental stress is considerable. Adjusting to the lifestyle is difficult
You will receive intensive skill-oriented training, utilizing Highway Patrol issued equipment and defensive tactics. You will establish advanced driving skills, by developing the ability to safely navigate a police vehicle through numerous, closely spaced, obstacles, with instruction on different courses.
You will develop the ability to disassemble, clean, and reassemble firearms using knowledge of parts and the ability to follow cleaning and assembly procedures. You will establish the ability to identify when deadly force is necessary and allowed. You will qualify with each issued firearm, both during daylight and nighttime. You will achieve skill utilizing Highway Patrol issued defensive weapons and personal control equipment, including: ASP Baton, Electronic Control Weapon (TASER), oleoresin capsicum spray, and handcuffs. You will be able to determine which defensive and/or control equipment is appropriate for a particular situation. You will qualify with each item of equipment by demonstrating a knowledge of agency policy and procedures, following strict protocols.
You will complete First Aid and CPR Training. You will develop the ability to diffuse a violators anger through control of voice, emotions, and body language.
All machines and equipment are used a considerable amount of time. Patrol vehicle, Mobile Data Unit, multi-channel radio, radar unit, programmable scanner, in-car video recording system and different types of emergency lighting devices and sirens. Firearms, Evidential Breath Alcohol Testing (EBAT) device, emergency first aid equipment and telephones.

Position Summary: Patrol / Enforcement – Promote general public safety and the protection of the citizens and travelers of Kansas through careful and safe actions and observations. Addresses any public health, unstable, or unlawful situation that may arise and acts within law, policy, and general professional conduct to best serve the public.
Reports/Communication/Investigation/Court – Initiates and completes detailed reports, legal documents, and other required paperwork. Prepares a variety of reports including those on activities, operations, arrests made, and unusual incidents observed. Prepares investigative reports and case information. Communicates effectively in order to receive all necessary information to perform duties and responsibilities; and to respond and transmit all relevant information. This is done through proper operation of all radio/ telephone equipment; knowledge of radio 10-codes and phonetic alphabet; effective use of English language; and skill in questioning, interrogating, and negotiating with suspects. Performs investigations and searches in order to gather information and evidence at crash and crime scenes. Testifies in courts and judicial hearings, prepares and presents case evidence, and responds to mandatory court calls during irregular hours.
Training – Completes annual training required to retain State law enforcement certification(s). Develops skills and knowledge required to perform duties which may include but are not limited to training in: firearms, defensive tactics, restraint techniques, motor vehicle operation, operation and care of equipment, communication, first aide, motor vehicle inspections, enforcement and investigations. Acquires knowledge and understanding of State and Federal laws and Kansas Highway Patrol policy and procedures. Acquires and retains required certifications. Attends training as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education: High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Licensing & Certification: Valid Kansas Driver’s License.

Necessary Special Requirements: Must be a United States citizen and at least 21 years of age. Must complete a basic law enforcement training program recognized by the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Commission and obtain certification as a law enforcement officer from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Commission before being given permanent status. At time of appointment, candidate must take and pass a drug screening test approved by the Division of Personnel Services and be required to pass a physical exam administered by the hiring agency. This class requires the use of a firearm for law enforcement duties and therefore, candidates cannot have been convicted of, and must be free of any diversions from, a felony or misdemeanor domestic violence crime as set forth in 18 U.S.C. 922 (d) (9) and (g) (9).

Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements: Required: Completion of Recruit class time and training academy curriculum, including successful completion of the following online Incident Command System (ICS) courses: ICS 100 and 700.
Must be free of felony convictions. Must submit to and pass a thorough background check and fingerprinting. Must comply with Federal Gun Control Act pursuant to 18 U.S.C. 922 (d)(9) and (g) (9). Must be able to run, walk, kneel, stand for extended periods of time, sit for extended periods of time, get in and out of a vehicle, bend, squat, reach, push, pull, drive, grasp, speak clearly, listen and comprehend verbal and written instructions, key for typing and occasionally lift 75 lbs. or more.
