Frequently Asked Questions
1. How do I apply for a specific job or position?
First, you must be eligible to enlist by meeting all the enlistment requirements. We have over 150 jobs in multiple career fields available. The jobs specifically available to you will be determined by:
- Your ASVAB/AFQT score. All jobs will require a valid ASVAB/AFQT score. A minimum score of 30 is required. Score higher 50 or higher will increase the jobs available to you.
- Your medical review and physical examination results. Some jobs will have medical restrictions.
- Your eligibility for a U.S. Government security clearance of SECRET or higher. Some jobs require a security clearance.
2. What is the difference between Active Duty (full time) and Army Reserve (part time)?
- Active Duty enlistments can be a 3, 4, 5, or 6 year contract. Once you complete training, you will be assigned to your first duty assignment. Duty assignments can be 1, 2, or 3 years in length. You, your family, your household items, and personal vehicle will be relocated for your duty assignment. Active Duty assignment locations are generally in the United States but can be overseas in a partner nation. Once you complete a duty assignment you will be reassigned to a new duty assignment, until your contract is complete. In general, you will not be able to choose your duty location.
- Army Reserve enlistments require a 6 year contract. Once you complete training, you will return to your home of record. You will be assigned to an Army Reserve unit as close as possible to where you live. Your Army Reserve commitment is one weekend per month and an additional 2 weeks per year. You are only paid by the Army Reserve during the time you are actively performing your Army Reserve duties. The rest of the time is yours. Generally, Army Reservists will have full-time civilian employment. If you decide to move, the Army Reserve will move with you and assign you to an Army Reserve unit close to your new location.
3. How long do I have to enlist for?
- Your enlistment is contract based.
- Active Duty enlistments can be a 3, 4, 5, or 6 year contract, depending on your job.
- Army Reserve enlistments require a 6 year contract, regardless of job.
4. What training will I have to go to? How long will training be?
- For both Active Duty and Army Reserve, you must attend and complete Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training.
- Basic Training is 9 weeks, 4 days (about 10 weeks) in length.
- Advanced Individual Training will vary in length depending on the job you enlisted for. Some jobs require 2 months of training, some may require over a year.
- Training is part of your enlistment contract. For example, if you enlist for a 6 year contract and your training takes 1 year total, you will have 5 years remaining after training.
5. What is my salary?
- A military pay chart is available for your review at https://www.dfas.mil/MilitaryMembers/payentitlements/Pay-Tables/
Active Duty:
- Your base pay is determined by your rank and time in service.
- You may receive additional pay for housing and meals, if qualified.
- You may receive additional special pay, if qualified.
- While the base pay may seem low to some, keep in mind that housing, meals, and medical coverage are provided. Take into consideration a comparable civilian salary minus rent, food, medical insurance, and other benefits.
Army Reserve:
- Your base pay is determined by your rank and time in service.
- You are only paid by the Army Reserve during the time you are performing your official Army Reserve duties.
6. Can I change my job before my contract ends?
Yes, the U.S. Army is actually more flexible than most people think. However you must meet the qualifications for the new job, the new job must not already be over-strength, and you may also need to perform your original job for at least one assignment.
7. Can I switch between Active Duty and Army Reserve?
- You are not able to transfer from Active Duty to Army Reserve.
- You can transfer from Army Reserve to Active Duty with an approved release from your Army Reserve unit.
8. How long will the enlistment application process take?
Processing time will vary from person to person. Your application must be reviewed at multiple levels and by multiple agencies. We will process you as fast as we can, however it may take anywhere from one month to over a year, depending on your situation.
9. How does processing work during the COVID-19 pandemic?
Processing will be completed electronically as much as possible. You will eventually have to process in person at several stages of your application. Proactive measures and restrictions are put in place to ensure everyone's safety.
