Job Description

This posting will be used to fill two vacancies, 60022844 and 60022902.
This is an Entry Level Transportation Worker Position within the Rutherford County Maintenance Unit in NCDOT. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of State Maintained roads and roadside features. Work includes installing traffic and erosion control devices, operating a variety of hand and power tools, clearing right of way, repairing pavements, assisting with pipe installation or other drainage tasks, inventorying materials, inspecting contract work, and operation of heavy equipment. Work may require lifting up to 80 lbs. repeatedly. Work will require exposure to all types of weather conditions. Work requires the ability to work on uneven surfaces and slopes. This position is subject to Emergency call back and scheduled night work during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Experience using small hand tools such as shovels, rakes, brooms, post hole diggers, hammer, screwdriver, torch, etc.
  • Experience performing manual labor.
Additional Expectations:
This position will be responsible for transporting inmates for work detail. An inmate card approved by the NC Department of Public Safety must be issued to NCDOT employees to transport inmates. In order to obtain an inmate card applicants must undergo a criminal history check, complete necessary training and orientation, and be at least 21 years of age. Must operate a motor vehicle, have ability to obtain a valid NC Driver License and safely be able to lift and carry 80 lbs. Pre-employment drug screening is required for this position. A release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past two years about controlled substance and alcohol testing. Safety toe footwear meeting ASTM F2413-05 and Class A CDL will be required for employment. Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT drug testing and post offer employment evaluation.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school education General Educational Development Diploma; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Requirements Possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License is mandatory for essential duties. CDL can be obtained through on-the-job training with a 60 day grace period to obtain a CDL Permit and 90 days to obtain a License.
