SUMMARY:
Under general direction of the Superintendent or designee, the Transportation Supervisor supervises the day-to-day operations of the District’s Transportation Department. This class is supervisory and responsible for selecting, and evaluating the performance of, and conducting discipline on, personnel assigned to the
Transportation Department (i.e., drivers, instructors, and paraprofessionals).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervises the day-to-day activities of the District’s transportation operations and assigned personnel for the purpose of prioritizing operational activities and project deadlines, and ensuring optimal utilization of personnel, vehicles, and equipment.
  • Plans and coordinates the scheduling and routing of student transportation.
  • Attends IEP meetings when needed to address, problem-solve, and ensure appropriate transportation for students with special needs.
  • Plans bus routes and schedules drivers to routes and buses.
  • Identifies and coordinates the acquisition, installation, and operation of transportation route planning and implementation software.
  • Coordinates work schedules of substitute drivers, acting as a back-up driver when necessary.
  • Conducts studies of traffic conditions, pupil load and distribution; makes operational improvements and adjustments as necessary.
  • Coordinates with site administrators regarding changes in site transportation needs.
  • Supervises and evaluates the performance of bus drivers and trainer personnel.
  • Assesses incidents, disputes, complaints and/or accidents for the purpose of resolving or recommending a resolution to the situation; initiates and applies progressive discipline as needed in coordination with the District’s Human Resources Department and higher-level management and Director of MOT.
  • Assists drivers in completing injury and accident reports.
  • Assists bus drivers in maintaining orderly school bus environment and assures student discipline is implemented as necessary.
  • Coordinates the mandated random drug-testing program for the District.
  • Prepares and maintains a variety of records and reports related to, but not limited to, accidents, costs, legal compliance, personnel, certifications, registrations, pupil counts, budgets and inventories.
  • Supervises the orientation and training programs for new employees in the transportation department.
  • Instructs drivers at in-services on regular vehicle safety inspections, emergency procedures, and cleaning vehicles.
  • Advises on hazards from inclement weather and road closures and determines and directs any operational changes needed to adjust to varying and unforeseen situations as they occur.
  • Assists in the selection of Transportation personnel.
  • Creates databases, uses spreadsheets and other computer applications.
  • Assigns equipment to drivers and may perform dispatch duties and/or drive a school bus on a back-up basis.

QUALIFICATIONS /REQUIREMENTS: (At time of application)

KNOWLEDGE OF/ABILITY TO:

  • Principles and practices of supervision and training.
  • Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary.
  • California Motor Vehicle Code, California Code of Regulations and the California Education Code as they relate to student transportation.
  • Safe driving practices and training methods.
  • Geographic and topographic characteristics of community serviced by the District.
  • Principles of efficient and economical bus routing techniques and scheduling of employees.
  • District personnel policies and labor contract provisions.
  • Principles of dispatching and scheduling of school buses.
  • Research methods and analysis techniques to develop solutions to operational issues and to ensure that the Transportation Department operates in conformance with applicable laws, regulations and policies.
  • Word processing, spreadsheet, database management, and applicable transportation-related software.
  • Basic record-keeping procedures.
  • Professional telephone techniques and etiquette.
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.

  • Dispatch and schedule bus drivers.

  • Motivate Transportation Department personnel to maintain a high level of customer service and operational efficiency and to inspire a spirit of cohesion and pride in the organization among assigned staff
  • Maintain records and prepare written and oral reports.
  • Plan, organize, evaluate and supervise the work of subordinates.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  • Operate various office machines such as typewriters, computer terminals, printers, calculators, answering machine, copiers, and multi-line telephone.
  • Plan, prepare and present in-service workshops.
  • Work independently with little direction.
  • Meet schedules and timelines with many interruptions.
  • Make arithmetic calculations with speed and accuracy.
  • Pass required random drug and alcohol screening.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE AND OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:

  • *High school diploma or equivalent. An Associate Degree is desired.
  • Five (05) years of experience in student transportation, including at least one year in a supervisory or lead capacity. (An AA Degree may substitute for up to two (02) years of the required non-supervisory experience).
  • *Possess, and maintain as a condition for continuing employment, a Class B, or higher, California

Driver’s License with passenger endorsement and school bus certification with air brake endorsement.

  • Possess, and maintain as a condition for ongoing employment, First Aid certification.
