JOB SUMMARY

The Transport Registered Nurse (RN) provides patient care in a mobile environment to high risk patients and their families. The transport nurse acts as a resource hospital wide for patient care standards. As a recognized resource, the transport nurse assists in establishing and maintaining a high quality standard of care for the neonatal and pediatric transport population, and is responsible for organizing, implementing, and coordinating patient care as directed by the Physician for the purpose of stabilization of the transfer to a tertiary or Special Care Center. The transport nurse is also responsible for participating in the care of NICU, ED and PICU patients and in the direction and guidance of other nursing staff members.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE ROLE

Provides critical care expertise to assist the team with patient assessment, stabilization, interventions and physician communications.

Responds to trauma team activations and doctor blues, and participates as a member of the Rapid Response Team when available.

Assists in the development, implementation and evaluation of departmental operations, policies, procedures, products, programs relating to the transport environment and patient population.

Identifies personal, departmental and hospital goals. Collaborates in a positive manner towards the success of the goals by offering input, ideas and solutions.

Maintains department responsibilities by attending educational offerings, staff meetings, departmental and hospital interdisciplinary meetings, case reviews, and recurrency training.

Assists in the development and validation of patient care standards for the transport patient population.

Facilitates learning for patients and families, nursing staff, other members of the health care team and community; integrating appropriate education throughout the continuum of care to help them participate and/or make informed decisions about their health care and treatments, including health promotion and disease prevention. Assesses and documents learning needs and outcomes.

KEY SUCCESS FACTORS

Knowledge and understanding of nursing and patient care standards and procedures.

Knowledge of laws, rules and regulations; standards and guidelines of certifying and accrediting bodies; hospital and department/unit standards, protocols, policies and procedures governing the provision of nursing care applicable to the area of assignment.

Knowledge of medical terminology; principles and practices of health promotion, risk reduction, illness and disease prevention and management; medications and drugs, common dosages, their physical and physiological effects, and possible adverse reactions.

Knowledge of medical and professional nursing ethics and patient privacy rights.

Must be able to communicate thoughts clearly, both verbally and in writing.

Interpersonal skills to interact with a wide-range of constituencies.

Must have critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Ability to observe changes in the medical condition of patients and effectively communicate these changes to other nursing staff members and physicians/providers.

General computer skills, including but not limited to: Microsoft Office, information security, scheduling and payroll systems, electronic medical documentation, and email.

Must be able to walk, stand for long periods, over 80% of the assigned work period. Must be able to squat occasionally and sit frequently.

In the Fixed Wing/Rotor Wing/Ambulance, must be able to lift/carry 50 pounds, push/pull up to 40 pounds occasionally, reach overhead moderately, climb moderately, squat/bend/kneel occasionally, sit/stand moderately, walk/move about frequently, tolerate tight quarters, small spaces and sit in a confined space.

2 years NICU or PICU experience preferred.
