Job Description
Purpose of Classification

The purpose of this classification is to, under general supervision, observe, and aid in the installation, maintenance and troubleshooting of traffic signal systems and related components to ensure safe, efficient and continuous flow of traffic.
Must be able to work from a bucket truck at heights of 25 feet or greater.

Essential Functions

Observes and aids in the maintenance, troubleshooting, testing and calibrating of traffic signal system electrical components and roadway lighting electrical circuits. • Observes and aids in programming, timing and phasing into controllers; inspects/verifies time of day for each controller in coordinated systems; records changes in timing, wiring, or any junction. • Aids in maintaining signal head lenses, reflectors, and disconnects; installing electrical wiring and replacing signal heads, lamps, and other hardware; operates Platform Truck and MOT truck. • Observes and aids in the inspections and troubleshooting roadway lighting, replaces, luminaires, fuse holders, blown fuses, ballasts, transformers, replace individual installations that have been knocked down by motor vehicles. • Conduct Photometric Analysis. • Observes and aids in locating underground electrical cables and pull boxes using electronic sensor equipment. • Operates a desktop or laptop computer, general office equipment, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, to include the use of database, e-mail or other software applications. • Observes and aids in the installation and maintains communications systems, electronic systems, or other equipment as needed, such as communications equipment, modems, electronic time clocks, solar systems, or direct current systems. • Facilitates underground drilling and boring work; locates underground wiring using electronic sensor equipment; locates existing signal and street light cables; locates pull boxes covered by landscaping and raises boxes to proper level. • Conducts, monitors, records, and reports manual and mechanical traffic counts. • Performs manual tasks associated with work activities; mows grass and cuts shrubbery around traffic signal cabinets; cuts asphalt and concrete; pulls and runs cables; digs holes/trenches and shovels materials; lifts/moves heavy materials. • Hauls, transports, loads, and/or unloads various equipment and materials associated with projects. • Maintains current inventory and records of equipment, street lights, signal heads and hardware tools, materials, and supplies; stocks materials on truck; ensures availability of adequate materials to conduct work activities; initiates requests for new or replacement materials; receives, unloads, and stores incoming deliveries of materials. • Observes and operates a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools associated with projects and work activities, which may include a bucket truck, lift truck, hydraulic lift, utility vehicle, drill, air compressor, generator, jig saw, band saw, radial saw, soldering iron, locator, load switch analyzer, controller tester, oscilloscope, relay tester, loop tester, conflict monitor analyzer, voltmeter, ohmmeter, multi-meter, shovel, weed eater, ladder, measuring instruments, mechanic tools, hand tools, or two-way radio. • Performs general/preventive maintenance tasks necessary to keep vehicles, equipment and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, refueling vehicles, checking/replacing fluids, greasing equipment, sharpening tools, washing/cleaning equipment, or cleaning shop/work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment. • Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; sets up safety work zones and assists with traffic control/safety at work sites. • Responds to emergency situations as needed. • Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, logs, checklists, work records, maintenance reports, inspection reports, inventory records, traffic counts, vehicle maintenance records, or other documents. Receives various forms, reports, correspondence, logs, work orders, invoices, signal maintenance reports, timing reports, photographs, schematics, blueprints, maps, specifications, standards, policies, procedures, manuals, reference materials, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate. • Communicates with supervisor, employees, other divisions, contractors, the public, outside agencies, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems. • Attends meetings as needed. • Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge of applicable laws and regulations; maintains an awareness of new technologies, methods, trends, and advances in the profession; reads professional literature; attends workshops and training sessions as appropriate.
In the event of a declared state of emergency, employees in this classification may be called to work during days or hours other than those for which they are regularly scheduled.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; supplemented by vocational/technical training in electricity, electronics, mechanics, and traffic control system operations; supplemented by one to two years previous experience and/or training involving electronics, mechanical maintenance, traffic control system operations, and equipment operation; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must maintain and/or obtain a valid FDOT or IMSA Work Zone Safety within the first six (6) months of employment. Must maintain and/or obtain a valid Class B Florida Commercial Driver's License (CDL) including appropriate endorsement(s) after the first six (6) months of employment. Fingerprinting required.
