Job Description

Summary: SUMMARY
The Tool & Die Maker II is responsible for all duties listed below, follows all work processes implemented in the department and follows all Safety and Company guidelines as outlined in the department manuals. Analyzes specifications and makes recommendations for fabrication, improvements and modifications to secondary equipment. Duties involve laying out metal stock, setting up and operating machine tools, fitting and assembling parts to fabricate and repair secondary tooling, cutting tools, jigs and fixtures, quality gauges, machinists’ hand tools. Assists in training personnel on aforementioned equipment developed for secondary operation.
Essential Functions: ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Perform In-House preventative maintenance, troubleshooting of secondary equipment, disassemble tooling or equipment to be repaired, modified or sharpened, reassembly of tooling or equipment
  • Studies specifications such as blueprints, sketches, models or descriptions. Visualizes product to determine materials required and machines to be used to fabricate parts and tooling for secondary operations.
  • Responsible for recommending improvement to parts or secondary tooling processes including materials and machines.
  • Ability to visually troubleshoot issues on molded and assembled parts when necessary utilizing part samples to determine root cause of problem
  • Develop, troubleshoot and repair jigs, fixtures and Secondary Tooling with minimal supervision
  • Aid in the production areas as needed to perform second operation functionality, repairs & possible processing troubleshooting
  • Ability to read and comprehend blueprints and detailed tool drawings and written/verbal instructions in order to perform the work required
  • Ability to compute dimensions, plan layouts and determine assembly method/sequence of operations
  • Interface with Engineers and Production personnel
  • Ability to engineer and manufacture Fixtures, Jigs and Tooling from conversations, ideas and verbal direction with minimal Engineering Department support
  • Set-up and operate all standard tool room equipment including conventional mills, lathes, surface grinders
  • Connects electrical wiring, hydraulic or pneumatic lines to secondary equipment.
  • Handle shop equipment safely to ensure safety of personnel, equipment, and tooling
  • Meet deadlines and efficient routing of job through shop in a timely manner
  • Attend to projects/assignments as directed by your Supervisor, Manager or Engineer
  • Inspect, analyze and determine project needs, verifying dimensions using micrometers, gauge, dial indicators and other related precision instruments
  • Observe and adhere to all company policies and procedures
  • Operate a forklift and overhead hoist
  • Enter work performed into in-house electronic computer tracking system
  • Maintain reliable and consistent attendance, including being punctual, and dependable in order to meet the needs of the department and the organization.
  • Execute each essential duty satisfactorily in order to perform job successfully.
  • Follows all safety procedures required in work area, wears PPE as needed, attends all safety meetings, and reports safety issues regarding equipment or unsafe/hazardous conditions.
  • Performs effectively as a team member, able to work well with others, open to receive and give feedback, and treats everyone with respect.
  • Takes ownership of own work and behavior, accepts accountability for own actions, encourages solutions, and communicates status of work/projects.
  • Follow all department quality standards/criteria. Raise concerns and issues to immediate manager.

Requirements: REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Extensive knowledge to operate various tools such as milling machines, lathes, grinders, drill presses, etc.
  • Ability to perform math functions
  • Basic understanding of hardness principles and appropriate application of steels
  • Geometry and Trigonometry skills as related to conversion of part drawings into parts
  • Ability to foresee tooling problems and suggest solutions
  • Ability to make work independently as well as with others as a team
  • Ability to read and comprehend blueprints and detailed mold/tool drawings and written/verbal instructions so as to perform the work required
  • Have basic computer skills such as keyboard, mouse and data entry, etc.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS*

  • Associate Degree or higher desired or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; 5 years related experience in a job shop or served 4 year apprenticeship through the “National Tool & Die Association” plus 2 to 3 years’ experience in a job shop.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to effectively present information to one-on-one, and small group situations, as needed, to internal departments (Mold shop, Maintenance, Production Managers, etc.)
