Job Description

Performs manual labor work in Fairbanks, in a variety of locations. Operates a forklift and man-lift to inspect, load and unload materials.


Examples of Duties:

Uses a forklift (lifts up to 12,000 lbs) to assemble bundles for loading; loading and unloading materials from rail cars; and stacking materials properly on ground.

Uses a man-lift to inspect materials prior to loading and unloading.

Ties down equipment on flat cars for movement.

Cleans, sweeps, paints, washes, rakes and shovels in assigned areas, e.g., Freight house, mechanical shops, TOFC, pipe yard, etc.

Assists operators in performing maintenance on equipment.

Occasionally drives company vehicles.

Minimum Qualifications


High school diploma or GED required. Six months of experience in general maintenance and freight handling is required. Must have experience operating a forklift capable of lifting up to 12,000 pounds. Must be able to comprehend and follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to exert very heavy physical effort in performing tasks such as frequent lifting and moving objects weighing approximately 75 pounds. Must have a valid driver's license.

Alaska Railroad Corporation Benefits
The following briefly describes the main benefits available to regular employees of the Alaska Railroad Corporation. Actual benefits differ by bargaining unit.

Retirement Plans
ARRC Pension Plan – Participation is mandatory. You are automatically enrolled in the Plan when you meet the eligibility requirement of your bargaining unit. Employees contribute 9% of their Earnings on a pre-tax basis. The Railroad is exempt from participation in Social Security; however, Medicare Tax is withheld. Participants vest with 5 years of eligible Vesting Service which entitles one to receive a pension benefit at retirement age.

A new tier of benefits was added for new hires in the ARW and TCU represented unions and for non-represented employees July 1, 2015.

Tier 1 Description
Normal Retirement Age is age 62. The formula for a monthly Normal Retirement Benefit is the sum of:

2% x Final Average Earnings x all Credited Service, PLUS
0.5% x Final Average Earnings x Credited Service earned after 2005 and after completing 10 years of Credited Service.
(Final Average Earnings are computed from the 3 highest consecutive years of Earnings.)


Tier 2 Description
Normal Retirement Age is age 65. The formula for a monthly Normal Retirement Benefits is 2% x Final Average Earnings x all Credited Service.

Early retirement, survivor and disability benefits are available for vested participants, although the benefit levels differ for Tier 1 and Tier 2 participants.

401(k) Tax Deferred Savings Plan – Participation is optional. You may enroll once you meet the eligibility requirement of your bargaining unit. Depending on the bargaining unit, there may be an employer match.

457 Deferred Compensation Plan – Participation is optional for non-represented employees.


Insurance and Flexible Spending Plans
All plans are optional except the RR Dental Plan for bargaining unit employees.

Health Insurance Plan
A comprehensive health insurance plan, self-insured by the ARRC and administered by Premera Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alaska, with medical, prescription drug, dental, vision and hearing components. Coverage is also available for the employee's spouse and dependent children. ARRC and the participant share the premium cost. Eligibility after 90 days for bargaining unit employees, and date of hire for non-represented employees.

RR National Dental: mandatory dental-only plan for bargaining unit employees (covers dependents also). Employee paid.

Life Insurance: Basic, AD&D, Supplemental and Dependent Life. Employee paid.

Flexible Spending Accounts: health care and dependent care. Employee paid.


Paid Leave & Holidays

Vacation Leave –accrual per bi-weekly pay period:

Represented Employees
0-3 Years of Service = 4 Hours
>3-15 Years of Service = 6 Hours
>15 Years of Service = 8 Hours

Non-Represented Employees
0-3 Years of Service = 6 Hours
>3-15 Years of Service = 8 Hours
>15 Years of Service = 10 Hours

Sick Leave: accrues at 4 hours (Represented) or 2 hours (Non-Represented) per pay period.
