The City of Glendale Aquatics Center is looking to fill Temporary Aquatics Swim Instructor positions. Potential employees must be available during the entire aquatics season starting in early May 2022 through early September 2022. Some pools may remain open during evening hours and on weekends through Labor Day weekend.

• Required training sessions will be held regularly and as needed.*

The listed positions are up to 40 hours per week for up to 14 weeks summer position with no benefits as well as a possible opportunity to work up to 20 hours per week for up to the remaining 38 weeks in the year with no benefits. The jobs will be performed at both our Rose Lane Aquatics Center (5003 West Marlette Ave, 85301) as well as our Foothills Recreation and Aquatics Center (5600 West Union Hills Drive, 85308). Staff are required to work at either location as assigned. You are hired to the City of Glendale Aquatics Staff, not to a specific pool.

Aquatics positions within the City of Glendale require certifications BEFORE hiring.

City of Glendale offerings for Swim Instructor (Water Safety Instructor Certification) Training for new Swim Instructors typically occurs in April 2022, but we do accept trainings from other entities that teach Swim Lesson Instruction from American Red Cross or StarGuard. American Red Cross is preferred.

Essential Functions
Under the direction of the Aquatics Coordinator, Pool Manager, Assistant Manager, and the Head Guard the Temporary Aquatics Swim Instructor will:
1. Be responsible for the day-to-day safe pool operations.
2. Be responsible for training and public safety, rescue and first aid.
3. Perform rescues and/or maintain crowd control during emergency situations by responding quickly and calmly.
4. Maintain high standards of safety and skills/in-service training.
5. Be familiar with and implement pool rules and regulations.
6. Exhibit concise communication skills verbally and written.
7. Maintain firm and consistent customer service practices with staff and patrons.
8. Be knowledgeable and able to communicate details of City of Glendale Aquatics programs to patrons as well as other staff members.
9. Monitor own schedules and report schedule adjustments to management as needed.
10. Monitor facility functions to prevent accidents, drowning, and near drowning as well as report any oddities that should be addressed by management or maintenance.
11. Monitor the activities of swimmers to detect problem areas.
12. Perform rescue techniques and render first aid during emergency situations.
13. Complete daily time cards, accident reports, incident reports and inventory needs.
14. Do the custodial cleaning of pool facility, including but not limited to restrooms, decks and the pool.
15. Maintain endurance and fitness through swimming and exercise.
16. Assure the timely opening and closing of the facility.
17. Become familiar with city rules and regulations for employees and patrons.
18. Know the proper use of job-related tools such as a whistle, megaphone, rescue tube, and first aid equipment.
19. Only if Cash Handling Trained through the City of Glendale, employee will handle money in a safe and accurate manner and provides exceptional guest services.
20. Teaches group swim lessons to children and adults.
21. Personally possess the swimming skills of the highest swimming lesson level offered by the City of Glendale.
22. May teach private lessons with supervisors’ approval and scheduling, requires at least one year previously teaching swim lessons.
23. May do water safety presentations.
24. Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications/Special Requirements/Success Factors
Applicants must be at least 16 years of age.
Must have an American Red Cross Lifeguard & First Aid Training R.17 certification that does not expire before September 2022 and American Red Cross CPR & AED for the Professional Rescuer R. 17 that does not expire before September 2022.
Applicant must also have a current certification through American Red Cross for Water Safety Instructor, that does not expire before September 2022.

If applicant possesses a current StarGuard certificate and can properly perform skills, they will be considered for hire. If hired, the applicant will be "crossed-over" to the American Red Cross certificates listed above.

Two years of high school preferred.

Fluency to read, write, and speak English is required. Ability to read, write, and speak Spanish is preferred.

Essential physical abilities:

• Sufficient clarity of hearing with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern emergency situations.
• Sufficient visual clarity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern emergency situations, discern colors and comprehend written work instructions as well as rules and regulations.
• Sufficient strength to lift objects over 50 pounds.
• Sufficient body flexibility and balance to perform rescue and first aid operations and occupy a lifeguard station accessible by ladder or perform walking duties.

Working Conditions:
This position is subject to extreme heat for periods of more than one hour and, subject to noise, sun exposure and extreme weather conditions.
