Position Qualifications

We recognize your time is valuable, so please apply if you meet the following required qualifications.

Education
  • High school diploma or GED

Experience
  • Six months of experience working with young children aged birth to five, OR
  • Six months of practicum hours through an early childhood education program, OR
  • Six months volunteering in an Early Head Start/Head Start program

Other Requirements
  • Must obtain a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential within two months of hire
  • Must complete a background check and fingerprint identification upon hire to secure and maintain an Arizona Department of Public Safety Level 1 Fingerprint Clearance Card
  • Must complete a medical exam that includes screening for Tuberculosis, as required by Federal and State regulations
  • Must obtain a CPR, First Aid, and Food Handler’s within six weeks of hire
  • Ability to read, write and speak Spanish may be required for some positions

Our Preferred Candidate has
  • Current or former Early Head Start and Head Start parents
  • One year of work experience in a licensed child care facility (age birth to five) or practicum hours through an early childhood education program or volunteering in an Early Head Start/Head Start program or any combination
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish

Essential Job Tasks

  • Supervises children at all times in accordance with Head Start Performance Standards and Program policies to ensure their safety and well-being
  • Assists the teacher in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of developmentally appropriate and educationally enriching early childhood activities in accordance with Head Start performance standards, child care licensing, and program policies and procedures
  • Supports and promotes each child’s physical, social, emotional, cognitive, and language development
  • Develops and maintains positive relationships with each family, site team members, community agencies, community partners, and grantee staff members
  • Stays current on educational techniques and developmentally appropriate practices relating to early childhood development
  • Learns how to develop, plan, organize and implement appropriate child education curriculum
  • Works effectively with individuals of diverse educational, socio-economic, and cultural backgrounds, and those with disabilities and special needs

Working Conditions
Work is performed in a classroom, playground, and office environment. May be required to fill in as a substitute staff member at another program site. Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds. Must be able to stand, sit on the floor, and be indoors or outdoors for extended periods. May have possible exposure to bodily fluids and infectious disease.

Teacher Assistant positions follow either a full or partial year schedule. The positions that follow a full-year schedule are typically comprised of 2088 hours annually. The partial-year schedule positions are typically comprised of 1,608 hours annually. Birth to Five site classrooms operates Monday through Friday.

Selection Procedure

Those selected will be assessed based on the evaluation of listed education and experience. The hiring authority will interview and select the successful candidate from a list provided by Human Resources.

All offers of employment made to new hires and rehires at Maricopa County are contingent upon successful completion of a post-offer, pre-employment thorough background investigation. A background investigation is conducted on a current employee who changes to a Safety Sensitive Position or one having the potential for serious adverse impact on the integrity or efficiency of the County. Typically, successful candidates are hired at a salary rate up to the midpoint of the range, based on relevant experience, internal equity, and budgetary allowances.

Full-time contract employees in the Educator Assistant, Educator, Educator Bachelor's, and Educator Coordinator Market Range Titles (MRTs) in the Education Division of the Human Services Department may be offered the following leave and benefit options:
  • Up to 80 hours of vacation time.
  • The following additional paid breaks: (1 paid day for the day after Thanksgiving; 10 paid days for winter break which may or may not include the County's Christmas Day and New Year's Day holidays; 5 paid days for spring break.)*
  • In order for employees to be eligible for the additional paid breaks identified above, they must be in a paid status for their entire scheduled day before and their entire scheduled day after the applicable paid break. An employee who is on an unpaid leave of absence of any duration on his/her scheduled work days prior to or after a paid break shall not receive paid break time.
