Descriptive StatementThe Tax Auditor I is a non-exempt position under the direction of the Tax Audit Manager. The Tax Auditor I performs professional level examinations of various business and governmental records to assure compliance with the City's tax and license ordinances. Responds to questions and complaints from the general public and other City departments.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
This is the entry-level classification in the Tax Auditor series. The Tax Auditor I is differentiated from the Tax Auditor II classification by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within the series. Employees at this level perform a full range of duties. The work of the Auditor I is observed and reviewed during both its performance and upon completion. The incumbent may have limited related work experience.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The physical standards an employee must meet in order to perform the essential job duties with or without a reasonable accommodation include, but are not limited to:
Must have ability to lift and move files and supplies weighing up to 30 pounds, with or without accommodation. Work is sedentary and done in a seated position, but requires frequent moving about, standing, bending, kneeling, reaching or stooping to perform filing. Position requires the ability to input large amounts of data using repetitive motion on a frequent and prolonged basis. The incumbent must be able to hear all communication from customers and employees by telephone or in person, and use vision to work with written documents, forms, and to respond to employees and customers. - Responsible for scheduling and performing audits in an efficient manner.
- Performs audits of a wide variety of businesses to assure compliance with tax ordinances.
- Explains tax and license ordinance requirements to taxpayers.
- Responsible for collections involving taxes and license fees.
- Determines business license requirements in accordance with the City's license ordinances.
- Performs internal audits of City departments and procedures.
- Appears and testifies on behalf of the City at tax hearings and court proceedings.
- Performs related accounting technical work.
- Other duties as assigned
IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS:
- May perform the duties of similar classifications of an equal or lower pay grade.
- May assist walk in taxpayers that have complex tax questions.
- Examines premises for licenses due.

- Working knowledge of general accounting principles and practices.
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of auditing.
- Working knowledge of City of Pueblo Ordinances.
- Ability to explain ordinance or regulation provisions to other City personnel and the general public.
- Knowledge of and ability to perform mathematical calculations, which include arithmetic, division, multiplication, statistics, and percentages.
- Knowledge of calculations to include sales tax liability, determine tax base, determine tax rate charged on a purchase.
- Skill and ability to deal diplomatically with the public in adverse situations.
- Must be able to maintain a high level of confidentiality and integrity.
- Proper business English usage, spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
- Excellent written and verbal communication.
- Superior analytical, investigational, and organizational abilities.
- Knowledge of and ability to use modern office equipment to include computers, printers, photo copy machines, scanners, multi-line telephone system, fax machine, calculator, and other specialized office equipment.
- Current word processing, presentation, communication, and research applications such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, Internet Explorer, and other various software programs.
- Knowledge of MS Excel and ability to compile data in a spreadsheet, develop formulas, copy/paste data, formulas to include summation, average, percentages etc., Link data from sheet to sheet within a workbook.
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle, distinguish directions, and ability to follow all City and State traffic laws.
- Ability to work successfully with and provide good customer service to supervisors, other City employees, the public and other agencies, and organizations; and
- Ability to perform all the job duties in a safe manner.
In addition to the knowledge, skills, and abilities, this position requires the following:
- A Bachelor's Degree or higher education from an accredited college or university in Accounting, Finance, and/or Business;
- A valid driver's license by date of application and must possess a valid Colorado's drivers license at the time of appointment.
- At least two (2) years of accounting or auditing experience.
