- Job SummaryProvides leadership with the Vice President for Nursing Practice Innovation to implement and sustain evidence-based nursing practices and standards of care that support the MedStar Health nursing professional practice model. Participates and leads a broad range of system committees, councils, task forces, and projects to meet MedStar Health Nursing strategic goals. Maintains and advances practice excellence through involvement with select patient populations and nursing specialty organizations. Evaluates and updates nursing practice excellence, in part, by searching, appraising, and synthesizing contemporary literature. Develops, implements and evaluates nursing practice standards with teams of clinical nurses, local Directors of Nursing Practice Innovation, and other clinical leaders across the continuum of care. Evaluates patient outcomes, identifies populations at risk and proposes clinical practice solutions. Develops innovative procedures and policies to improve care. Supports a scholarly and rigorous approach to practice through the implementation of nationally recognized programs such as NICHE, the Iowa model of evidence-based practice, Pathway to Excellence and the Magnet Recognition Program. Special emphasis is placed on the provision of patient and family-centric care using standards of nursing practice afforded by nursing professional organizations and overseeing development and modifications evidence-based clinical practice guidelines. Provides leadership and oversight for specialty nursing practice councils and programs. Reports directly to the MSH Vice President of Nursing Practice Innovation. Develops collaborative relationships with all disciplines and serves as a role model to promote the mission, vision, values and philosophy of MedStar Health Nursing.
- Minimum QualificationsEducation/TrainingMaster’s degree in Nursing is required from a nationally accredited nursing program. A Doctor of Nursing Practice degree or Advanced Nursing Practice degree/certificate from an accredited program is preferred. Experience5 years of clinical experience with at least 2 years of leadership and/or managerial experience. Serving as chair or co-chair of a system committee or council. Recent, demonstrated expertise locating and using evidence to support nursing practice activities. License/Certification/RegistrationLicensed as a registered nurse in the District of Columbia and Maryland. National certification in a recognized clinical specialty is preferred; required within 1 year of assuming this role. BLS required; ACLS preferred. Knowledge, Skills & AbilitiesExcellent problem-solving skills and ability to exercise independent judgment. Business acumen and leadership skills. Strong verbal and written communication skills with ability to effectively interact with all levels of management, internal departments and external agencies. Working knowledge of various computer software applications. The work requires identifying and resolving complex problems, developing innovative solutions-based searching, appraising and synthesizing literature, connecting with professional organizations through meetings or listservs and assembling extensive cross-functional knowledge of the various MedStar Health entities. Work assignments are generally received via system, hospital, departmental, specialty committee or nursing council goals; contemporary clinical, safety or product issues; or developing or updating evidence-based clinical practice guidelines. All work outputs require exquisite attention to detail, application of clinical judgment, and interpretation or creation of policies, procedures, and developing appropriate courses of action.
- Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Serves as a role model for professional nursing practice by integrating all components of the professional role: clinical practice, consultation, collaboration, leadership, education, and program evaluation.
- Provides system oversight for the adoption and sustained integration of the MedStar Health nursing care delivery model and interdisciplinary model of care.
- Creates (writes), updates, and promotes action/adoption and the sustained integration of evidence-based clinical practices and guidelines by clinical nurses.
- Evaluates current research findings and determines efficacy in clinical practice. Communicates and collaborates with Directors of Nursing Practice Innovation, Informatics and Professional Develop to implement clinical changes based on research.
- Evaluates patient outcomes and proposes and implements clinical practice solutions with entity Directors of Nursing Practice Innovation.
- Takes an active role in the MSH Nursing Practice Innovation Committee (NPIC) including acting as a chair of a NPIC subcommittee.
- Uses the Iowa Model to achieve evidence-based nursing practice including integration of decisions/activities endorsed by the NPIC.
- Applies specialty nursing standards in nursing practice specialty councils.
- Leads and participates system level committees, councils, task forces, or programs including those that are interdisciplinary in nature.
- Leads and participates in system level performance improvement initiatives to meet MSH targets for hospital-acquired conditions and quality and safety metrics.
- Remains abreast of innovative approaches to nursing practice through regular scanning/reading of nursing/leadership/clinical literature, through attendance at conferences, active participation in local or national professional organizations, or participation on professional organization listservs.
- Provides oversight for the MSH Nursing Peer Review Committee, Nurse Improving Care of Health System Elders (NICHE), and other clinical programs.
- Leverages activities associated with Pathway to Excellence and Magnet Recognition Programs to support clinical practice initiatives and programs.
- Partners with system Nursing Professional Development Specialist and Nursing Informaticists personnel to support changes in practice approaches.
- Utilizes performance improvement framework to develop and implement strategies that ensure clinical outcomes are achieved and sustained.
- Actively engages in the MSH nursing evidence-based practice cycle: Determining and implementing appropriate protocols, procedures; advising in creation and modification of clinical documentation and clinical decision support; selecting and evaluating appropriate products; and conducting plan, do, check, act initiatives to ensure expected clinical outcomes are achieved.
