    DutiesSummary

    The Orlando VA Healthcare System is looking for a Part-Time Surgical Technician. The Operating Room Surgical Technologist assists the surgeon in performing surgical procedures and manages/directs the sterile field during the procedure. The OR Surgical Technologist is responsible for all aspects of the technical preparation for the participation in surgical procedures.


    Responsibilities

    The individual displays a broad knowledge base and proficiency related to all types of surgical procedures in 8 operative services, including ophthalmology, general, plastics, gyn, ortho, podiatry, ENT and urology. The individual evaluates and collects all needed instrumentation, equipment, positioning devices, suture material, and special devices needed for any of the multitude of surgical procedures performed in this versatile, fast paced Surgery Suite. Duties include but are not limited to:

    • Preparation and maintenance of the surgical area.
    • Maintains proficiency in scrubbing for all operative procedures within the scope of the operating room.
    • Sets up procedure/operating room with correct instruments and supplies for the schedule case under the direction of the circulating nurse.
    • Identifies unsafe or defective instruments/equipment and implements appropriate corrective.
    • Verifies completeness of instruments/sponge/needle counts.
    • Cleans instruments, equipment, and room as appropriate when procedure is completed.
    • Ensures proper disposal of instruments, linen, trash, needles, sponges, and all biomedical waste.
    • Assist with patient core/procedures.
    • Assists the surgeon during surgical procedures under the surgeon's direct supervision.
    • Transports patients and medical records to destinations with scheduled time frames observing correct safety techniques.
    • Assist in positioning, preparation and draping procedure.
    • Performs simple wound closure as directed by the surgeon.
    • Maintains aseptic technique; recognizes breaks in technique by self or others and takes corrective action.

    Work Schedule: Normal tour of duty is 6:30am-5:00pm but must be willing to adjust their tour of duty as needed to meet the needs of the clients

    Physical Requirements: The work requires long periods of standing with few breaks, as well as lifting, bending, positioning patients, and some movement of cumbersome equipment.     QualificationsTo qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
    Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-7 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-6. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade.Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
    • Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-6 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: preparing and organizing complex sterile surgical setups, observing and responding to each stage of the surgical procedure and anticipating the needs of the surgeon, assisting team members with patient care, performing instrument counts, preparing prosthesis and surgical devices during procedures, and assisting the surgeon by performing procedures such as suctioning and cutting sutures. Specialized experience must have been performed in the operating room to be creditable at the full performance level. . OR,
    • Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended.

    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Education
