Summary:
Responsible for on site supervision of the day to day clinical laboratory microscopy operations; performs all approved laboratory procedures in designated area, and generates laboratory data under direction of the Clinical Laboratory Operations Manager. Supports Quality Objectives as established annually by senior management.
Responsibilities:
1. Follows laboratory protocol and procedures. Maintains safe work habits and keeps work area clean.
2. Working supervisor position that requires a physical presence in the laboratories throughout 90% of the shift. Assigns and directs microscopy staff in daily lab workload production.
3. Responsible for administration, production and quality assurance functions to meet all regulatory and accreditation standards.
4. Performs microscopic analysis of CTC’s such as enumeration and FISH on a regular basis on both manual and automated platforms.
5. Ensures policies and procedures are followed by all microscopy laboratory staff.
6. Supervises Quality Control and Proficiency Testing programs as directed by the Clinical Laboratory Operations Manager and VP and Laboratory Director to meet regulatory and accreditation standards.
7. Recommends budget expenditures and budget planning concepts.
8. Participates in the hiring and evaluation process of direct reports.
9. Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities):
Requires a BS Degree in Medical Technology or a Major Science (chemistry, biology, and physics), and CA Licensed Clinical Laboratory Scientist or CA Limited CLS license in Cytogenetics. Minimum of 10 years laboratory experience and 5 years of supervisory experience in a high complexity clinical laboratory setting.
Requires the ability to cope with high levels of responsibility, a professional approach to work, excellent communication skills, accuracy and pay a high level of attention to detail, and the ability to concentrate for long periods of time as well as good problem-solving skills.
- Professional knowledge of concepts, principles, practices, methodologies and instrumentation of each discipline of clinical laboratory science and technology in performing complex analytical analysis.
- Knowledge of quality control principles sufficient to maintain and advise on actions taken relative to quality control and correlation of laboratory results.
- Knowledge and understanding of instrument technology sufficient to monitor mechanical and technical operations by the laboratory staff and to direct any needed corrections to maintain operations.
- Ability to institute continuous quality improvement principles to produce the best possible laboratory data.
- Ability to use knowledge to develop and improve unit based QA/QC/QI programs and communicates findings to appropriate multi-disciplinary members of the team.
Environmental Conditions:
Clinical laboratory environment. Works with chemicals and exposure to chemical odors. Some exposure to general office, research and development and manufacturing areas.
