Job Description

The City of Kalamazoo Parks and Recreation Department is looking for dependable and responsible individuals to work at our Camp Kzoo Summer Camp and Super Rec Summer Camp Sites.

This is seasonal/temporary employment, which will not exceed six (6) months in duration.

Examples of Duties

Staff at all Camp sites will:

  • Provide oversight of youth participants and programming
  • Attend necessary meetings/trainings to enhance content delivery
  • Supervise activities on consistent basis
  • Instruct participants in daily programming
All applicants who intend to instruct should be flexible, caring individuals who enjoy working with program participants ages 5 to 12. Applicants should also be available Monday through Friday, from mid-June to mid-August, unless otherwise noted in the areas below.
Staff may be assigned to one or more of these specialized program areas:
Performing Arts: Candidates may create and implement a 9-week lesson plan that supports performing arts. A background or direct experience in acting, improv, music, and/or dance are desired.

Arts & Crafts: Candidates may create and implement a 9-week lesson plan that supports art and crafting. A background or direct experience in 2D, 3D, clay, and painting are desired.

Sports & Games: Candidates may create and implement a 9-week lesson plan that supports healthy lifestyles and sportsmanship through fun and interactive games. A background or direct experience in playing team sports or games are desired.

Flyer: Candidates will assist staff at the Performing Arts, Sports & Games, or Arts & Craft sites. Candidates may lead pre-planned activities when another staff is absent and assist at the sign in / sign out table of any designated site. Candidates will also supervise small groups of participants on field trips.

Early Morning Drop-Off: Candidates will greet, supervise, and ensure participants are properly checked in each morning. Candidates will guide participants to the correct Camp sites and may assist or substitute at any of the other program areas throughout the day. This assignment works from 7:15 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. each morning, with the occasional need to assist throughout the day.

All-Day Substitute: Candidates will lead or assist pre-planned activities when another staff is absent at any of the program areas. Candidates will be placed every day at a Camp site based on where there is a need. This assignment works 8:30 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. Monday through Friday. Candidate must have reliable transportation to attend every Camp site.

Essential Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must possess valid driver license
  • Must have prior youth work experience
  • Must be available to work between May 25 and August 14 (unless prior arrangements have been approved)

Acceptable Training and Experience

All training is provided. Prior experience working with youth or working towards a degree in a youth field is highly preferred.
