The Substitute Sign Language Interpreter is responsible for sign language interpretation duties in connection with the CPS deaf/hard of hearing program and performs related duties as required.
The Substitute Sign Language Interpreter will be held accountable for the following responsibilities:
- Provides assistance to deaf/hard of hearing students by transmitting spoken messages and environmental cues using sign language
- Facilitates communication between students and others
- Uses sign language to convey teacher instruction and intent
- Assists deaf/hard of hearing students with daily activities
In order to be successful and achieve the above responsibilities, the Job Title must possess the following qualifications:
Certifications or Licenses required:
- Current approval by ISBE as an Educational Sign Language Interpreter
- Attained a rating of Level 3.5 or above on EIPA
- BEI Certification (All Levels)
- RID Certification
Type of Experience and Number of Years:
A minimum of 2 years educational interpreting experience highly preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to work with students grades Kindergarten through high school
- Willingness to work at school sites throughout the district
- Able to transport independently to all sites
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with administrators, staff, students, and parents
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds
Residency Requirement:
As a condition of employment with the Chicago Public Schools (CPS), employees are required to live within the geographic boundaries of the City of Chicago within six months of their CPS hire date and must maintain residency throughout their employment with the district.
