The Emory University Libraries seek a Student Success Librarian to contribute to our growing instruction program and to further our commitment to student success. This position is an opportunity for an early career professional to gain valuable skills and experience in an academic library. The ideal candidate will be someone who is looking to further their skills in library instruction, outreach, and assessment, who is interested in helping us develop innovative approaches to instruction and outreach, particularly in online learning environments, who shares the Libraries’ commitment to social justice and inclusive pedagogy, who is committed to student success, and who is able to work successfully in a collaborative environment.

Position Summary


Reporting to the Head of Instruction and Engagement, the Student Success Librarian will work collaboratively with members of the Research, Engagement, and Scholarly Communications division to develop and promote a growing libraries instruction program that is committed to upholding the Libraries’ commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and to further the Emory Libraries’ commitment to student success. As a member of the Instruction and Engagement team, the Student Success Librarian will play a vital role in helping the Libraries develop flexible and inclusive instruction and outreach programming for both in-person and online environments. The Student Success Librarian will work on a variety of instruction projects, including teaching information literacy classes for undergraduate students, teaching and developing workshops on digital literacy and information literacy topics, engaging in assessment projects related to Emory’s undergraduate population, and creating content to support our growing online instruction programming. The Student Success Librarian will also take the lead on outreach and engagement projects at the libraries, including developing outreach programming for undergraduate students and developing orientation programming.


Key Responsibilities and Duties

  • Work collaboratively to help the Emory Libraries develop new approaches to conducting outreach and instruction in increasingly flexible teaching and learning environments, including online environments.
  • Work collaboratively to ensure that the Emory Libraries instruction program upholds values of diversity, equity, and inclusion and a commitment to anti-racist pedagogy.
  • Develop, conduct, and assess information literacy instruction sessions for undergraduate students, particularly for students in English 101 classes.
  • Develop, conduct, and assess information and digital literacy skills workshops for undergraduate and graduate students. Lead workshops on research tools such as Zotero.
  • Work with faculty to integrate information literacy into their course assignments.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to design, develop, and assess online instructional materials, including LibGuides, to support the libraries instruction program.
  • Provide support to new initiatives focusing on the first-generation student experience at the Libraries.
  • Develop outreach programming for undergraduate students, including study break programming during exams and orientation events.
  • Work with the Head of Instruction and Engagement to promote and market instruction and engagement programming.
  • Collaborate with library colleagues and campus partners to provide support for undergraduate student success initiatives.
  • Partner with the Emory Writing Center to develop programming to support undergraduate student research and writing.
  • Provide support to undergraduate research programs, including the university’s Scholarly Inquiry and Research Experience program.
  • Collaborate with library colleagues on a developing and supporting a library student ambassador program.
  • Incorporate current and emerging instructional practices, methodologies, and technologies into library instruction.


Professional Responsibilities

  • Participates in appropriate professional and scholarly associations and organizations including maintaining membership and/or accreditation; attending meetings, conferences, workshops; and serving in appointed or elected positions.
  • Maintains up-to-date professional knowledge and skills in areas related to primary job assignment as well as maintains general knowledge of current trends in higher education, academic libraries, and information and educational technology.
  • Provides reference assistance to Emory students and faculty, visiting scholars, and the public as needed and assigned.
  • Adheres to guidelines outlined in the Handbook Governing the Librarian series for Faculty-Equivalent Librariansto ensure appointment, appointment renewal and promotion-in-rank
  • Participates in library and campus committees as appropriate for service purposes.


Required Qualifications

  • ALA-accredited master’s degree in Library and Information Science OR equivalent education and library experience. Master’s degree or equivalent must be awarded by June 30, 2021.
  • Teaching and instruction experience, whether in a library setting or another educational setting.
  • Experience creating and using online instructional materials.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience providing services for undergraduate student populations.
  • Ability to work successfully in a fast-paced and collaborative environment.
  • Commitment to user-centered library services.
  • Ability to build and sustain effective interpersonal relationships with library staff, faculty and students, off campus faculty and administrators, campus administrators, etc.
  • Evidence of analytical, organizational, communication, project, and time management skills and demonstrated ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, and complete tasks and projects on time and within budget and in accordance with task/project parameters.
  • Commitment to fostering a diverse educational environment and workplace and an ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student population.
  • Capacity to thrive in an ambiguous, future-oriented environment of a major research institution and to respond effectively to changing needs and priorities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current trends and issues in academic libraries, higher education, and relevant subject disciplines.
  • Evidence of active participation, involvement, and leadership in local, state, regional, national, or international professional or scholarly associations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two or more years of experience with instruction in libraries.
  • Experience with assessment tools and techniques.
  • Experience providing reference services and research consultations.
  • Experience with marketing and creating promotional materials.
  • Practical knowledge of ACRL’s Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education.

Professional librarians at Emory Libraries are 12-month faculty-equivalent positions evaluated annually with assigned ranks renewable for 3 or 5 years based on experience and background. Appropriate professional leave and funding is provided. Depending on educational credentials and position, librarians may be considered for a shared/dual appointment between the library and academic department as a faculty member. Librarian appointees at Emory generally have educational credentials and professional backgrounds with academic library experience and/or disciplinary knowledge and demonstrate a commitment to continuous learning, professional engagement and involvement, research and scholarship, creativity, innovation, and flexibility. Such backgrounds will normally include a graduate degree from an ALA-accredited library and information science program AND/OR a discipline-specific master’s OR doctoral degree. In addition to professional competence and service within the library in the primary job assignment, advancement and/or appointment renewal requires professional involvement and contributions outside of the library and scholarly activities.
