Performs developmental engineering tasks in support of senior level engineers. Under the direction of a senior level engineer, provides engineering support for environmental testing. Depending on area of assignment, tasks may include but are not limited to: directs or performs structural tests, static load, mass properties, steady state acceleration, and model survey of spacecraft components; directs test setups, determines instrumentation methods, provides calculations for test loading and generates test reports; analyzes and evaluates structural performance. Directs or performs modal survey, vibration, and acoustic tests on flight hardware; directs engineering tasks for maintenance, repair, or upgrade of mechanical and electrical systems. - Working with flight projects, NASA test engineers and Facility Engineering to plan develop and execute structural tests using the environmental test facilities at NASA. Types of tests include static load testing, acoustic, vibration, centrifuge, and modal testing. Will lead a team of technicians and/or junior engineers in accomplishing assigned tasks. May create complex analysis of collected data, provide test documentation in a test folio and complete test reports. - Develops test procedures, when required, cost and schedule estimates, and oversees set-up and test execution. Reviews Work Directive expenditures to ensure estimates are not exceeded without reasonable justification. Updates Work Directive scope and cost as necessary. Completes all test preparations and facility readiness tasks to meet project technical and schedule (as negotiated) requirements and Branch Quality System requirements. - Resolves technical and programmatic issues with minimal outside intervention. Conducts all tests within test specifications and NASA requirements. Ensures all test data is acquired and all data analysis is performed in accordance with test procedures. Provides recommendations to management regarding process and facility improvements and upgrades. - Ensures that work practices comply with applicable safety and occupational health standards, rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Is aware of and complies with applicable safety requirements for work, including but not limited to, the Mechanical Systems Safety Manual as posted to the GDMS. Asks knowledgeable persons (lead engineer, supervisor, lab manager, building FOM, etc.) if safety requirements are not understood. Ensures hardware and personnel safety concerns are promptly addressed. - May also perform temporary duties in other areas or other duties associated within area of assignment.
Work Environment - Work indoors and out in high and low temperatures and in all types of weather conditions. - Work in dusty, noisy, hot, high humidity, dirty, and greasy environment.- Work in clean rooms.- Must be capable of working from ladders, scaffolding, catwalks, cranes, suspended platforms or cages, etc.- Must be capable of working in small and large confined spaces.- Must have the ability to distinguish color for eight color display while monitoring testing data.- Must be able to accommodate shift changing, weekend and holiday support on short notice, and extended hours as required.


Basic Qualifications:
B.S Degree in electrical/mechanical engineering plus three years related experience.Familiarity with hand tools & electrical & mechanical principles.Must be capable of passing required physical examinations and successfully completing the following training: Electrostatic discharge, hazard communication, confined space, Electrical Safety, Cryogenic safety, clean room, personal protective equipment, IT security and other required training or certifications as directed by program management.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of the operations and maintenance of all test facilities and utility infrastructure in a testing complex.- Experienced with lab test equipment vibration exciters, acoustic exciters, and ancillary equipment.- Experience and practical ability with hydraulic load testing equipment- Experience with computerized controls and specialized electronics.- Experience with shock, static load and vibration testing.- Experience with Crane, Man-Lifts, Boom and Forklifts.- General desktop experience for Windows based office suite.- Experience with MATLAB, Digital Signal Processing and LabView.
