About the Role:

The Vehicle Safety Data Analytics Statistician will use statistical and mathematical techniques to collect, analyze, and interpret data to help Global Product Safety and Systems and other engineering groups make sensible business decisions. They should exhibit extensive experience in performing statistical analyses and possess the ability to interpret results optimally. Typical work includes collaborating with engineers, interpreting qualitative and quantitative data, tracking and predicting potential trends, and making risk assessments.

Responsibilities
- Influence decision making with strong, unbiased applied statistical analyses
- Statistically identify trends, patterns and outliers in safety-centric data
- Make lifecycle/reliability predictions by fitting statistical distributions to failure data
- Design and implement repeatable data gathering techniques and statistical analyses
- Convey complex information to people who may not be specialists
- Present information in a variety of formats to all levels of leadership
- Collaborate with statisticians / data scientists / analysts
- Collaborate with Safety Analytics, Engineering, CDAO, Quality and IT partners on projects
- Participate in technical conferences, meetings, and other vehicle safety forums as needed
Required Skills:
- Master's degree in Applied Statistics / Mathematics, Actuary Sciences or related field
- 5+ years of work experience in statistics or analytics or 2+ years of direct vehicle safety statistical analysis
- Strong expertise in applied lifecycle/reliability and time series analyses
- Proven understanding of the following statistical methods: descriptive statistics, categorical data analysis, multivariate analysis, logistic regression and survival / reliability analysis
- Knowledge of Statistical Process Control techniques
- Expertise visually charting and graphing data
- Experience with text mining, and/or machine learning to analyze text/unstructured data
- Experience with data preparation, rationalization, and processing
- Ability to be strategic and tactical, with strong problem-solving abilities
- Ability to independently handle high volume workload
- Must be a self-starter and highly comfortable dealing with ambiguity
- Continuous learning mindset - willingness to learn new skills and methods as needed
- Understanding of vehicle safety technologies, including design intent, function and intended performance in the field
- Proficiency with one or more analytical and modeling tools such as Python, R, and SQL
- Data Integration: SQL; NoSQL (Hadoop, Casandra); Alteryx, Trifacta
- Business Intelligence/Reporting Tools: Tableau, Power BI, Excel, JMP, SAS, SPSS, Cognos
- Databases: Access, Oracle, SQL Server, DB2
- Using your extensive experience, data, and judgment to plan and accomplish goals
- Proficient in statistical methods such as regression, probability analysis, risk analysis, statistical process control
- Understanding of data gathering, inspecting, cleansing, redefining, and modeling/diagramming techniques
- Communication skills with the ability to distill sophisticated subjects to a wider audience
- Excellent collaboration and project management skills
Preferred skills:
- Knowledge of GM IT systems and processes, especially in the areas of Engineering, Quality/Warranty, Customer Care and Aftersales, or OnStar
- Proven understanding of safety standards and regulations
- Professional certification in statistics and data analytics a plus
