Job Description
Our Learning Technology team is looking for an Staff Systems Engineer for our Learning products, based in Austin, TX. You will drive end to end infrastructure planning & provisioning, production operations, deployment, engineering strategy and best practice across all learning products. You will bring your passion for highly resilient, highly available, and scalable N-Tier and distributed solutions involving integrations with 3rd party vendors. You will be an integral member of the People Technology team, helping to bring the best learning experience for our employees and our clients. You will report to the Director of Learning Technology, based in Austin, TX.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct deployment activities - own infrastructure planning, product deployment, change management, and maintenance activities in various production and non-production environments using CI/CD and DevOps processes
- Maintain compliance with Operational Excellence and Reliability Engineering standards (Availability, Agility, Analytics, Automation, Resiliency, Monitoring) to ensure uptime and excellent user experience
- Create & automate operational processes and associated runbooks
- Embed with the delivery team to ensure that solutions are designed for post-launch readiness and support
- Implement Visa standards and controls applicable to infrastructure, applications, security and change management (SLA/OLA/Security)
- Own & report on KPIs (Metrics and analytics on team performance when it comes to tickets, resolution, SLA’s etc.)
- Own and drive P1/P2 incidents to closure as the first point of contact.
- Research and drive adoption of best practices for infrastructure and operations excellence.
- Mentor junior team members on the art of “operations excellence”, and to create operations-friendly products.
This is a hybrid position. Hybrid employees can alternate time between both remote and office. Employees in hybrid roles are expected to work from the office two days a week, Tuesdays and Wednesdays with a general guidepost of being in the office 50% of the time based on business needs.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications:
- 5 or more years of experience in Infrastructure planning, Operations and Engineering Excellence with a bachelor’s degree or at least 2 years of work experience with an Advanced degree (e.g. Masters, MBA, JD, MD) or 0 years of work experience with a PhD
- Hands-on experience in deploying and managing N-Tier enterprise applications with integrations to external 3rd party vendors
- Strong understanding of Disaster Recovery approaches for deployed products
- Passion for operational excellence and high-availability - proven track record of influencing product design decisions to be operations-friendly.
- Basic knowledge of Operating systems, Networking, databases, SaaS, Enterprise Security.
- Awareness of Windows, Unix, Middleware & Database technologies, VM management, SaaS, as well as modern cloud-native technologies
- Excellent process management administration and orchestration skills.
- Experience working with cross functional teams to design, plan, provision, secure, and operate deployments.
- Prior experience of Proxies, Load Balancer, NAT, SSL/TLS, API integrations
- Prior experience of Identity Access Management (IAM) solutions
- High-priority Incident Management experience
- Understanding of non-functional requirements and their impact on a solution (Scalability, Availability, etc.)
- Willingness to learn the domain and applications and be hands-on in non-prod and prod environments
- Evaluate requirements for product launch and post-launch operations.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Passion to stay on top of various environment and deployment issues - available for calls at any time.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 6 or more years of work experience with a Bachelor’s Degree or 4 or more years of relevant experience with an Advanced Degree (e.g. Masters, MBA, JD, MD) or up to 3 years of relevant experience with a PhD
- Experience as an Operations Lead
- Familiarity with best-in-class security and O&I protocols, processes, and controls.
- Experience working with learning products like Degreed, Cornerstone, Watershed, Pluralsight, Lynda, Safari and others.
- Uncompromising adherence to technical quality for product readiness for operations.
- Automation and event-driven mindset. Product uptime conviction.
