Brief Summary of Job Duties

Acts as a lab manager for Dr. Kenneth Kosik's laboratory - a large lab consisting of about 30 members (including post docs, graduate students, project scientists and undergraduate students). Conducts research in the field of neuroscience under the supervision of a senior lab member. Performs molecular and biochemical analyses and works as part of a team with other senior lab members to assist in the completion of their research projects. Performs molecular biology experiments such as subcloning, PCR, qPCR, RT-PCR, western blot & gel electrophoresis. Writes common lab protocols and trains and supervises new lab members with the established experimental protocols as well as lab safety protocols. Writes the hSCRO protocols for stem cell usage, IACUC protocols for mouse experiments and BUAs. Supervises administrative and lab management tasks such as autoclaving biohazardous materials, glassware and managing stocks for the Kosik lab. Requests quotes, negotiates pricing, and ensures that grants are spent appropriately. Gives safety training and orientation for new lab members. Works with DEA to obtain license for controlled substances for the lab and keeping a proper record for DEA audits. Prepares and updates lab Chemical Hygiene Plan. Oversees regulatory compliance of the lab. Is on call after hours for lab emergencies. The successful candidate must be able to work independently, and as part of a larger collaborative group working on neurodegeneration and neural plasticity.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Neuroscience or related field and/or equivalent combination of education & experience
  • 1-3 years experience in molecular biology research, lab managing & administration and protocol writing experience, purchasing, restocking reagents.
  • Comfortable lifting heavy loads (up to 50 lbs).
  • Able to work independently, and as part of a larger collaborative group working on neurodegeneration and neural plasticity.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in Neuroscience or related field.

Job Functions/Percentage of Time/Duties

Research Experiments (50% Daily) -

Conducts research in the field of neuroscience and cell biology. Performs molecular biology experiments such as subcloning, PCR, qPCR, RT-PCR, western blot & gel electrophoresis. Conducts research related to Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative conditions. Responsible for all work with induced pluripotent stem cells, imaging of the cells, quantitification of the images, statistical analyses. Will perform single cell RNAseq from brain tissue. Will prepare brain organoids.

Lab Management and Maintenance (50% Daily) -

Supervise and delegate a variety of lab maintenance tasks to lab assistants & undergraduates. Responsible for negotiating pricing, and ensuring that grants are spent appropriately; sending, receiving & distributing packages for the lab; giving safety orientations for new lab members; supervise, train & assist new members on using autoclave machines; supervise & train lab assistants & undergraduates on cell culture sterile techniques; write and improvise common lab experimental protocols, addressing lab issues and resolving them, keeps track of controlled substances inventory for regulatory compliance with the DEA/EHS; ensures that all safety/animal/stem cell protocols are up to date; be on call for any lab emergencies.


As a backup for delegated duties, responsible for: placing laboratory equipment and supply orders, requesting quotes; periodic defrosting and reorganizing -20?C and -80?C freezers, ensuring proper distribution and disposal of hazardous trashes and liquid lab waste; performing annual inventory of common lab chemicals, supervise & train lab dishwashers, keep the lab organized and label all the common reagents. Makes room reservations for lab meetings and prepares a list of presenters. Keeps and updates google spreadsheets of all the lab organizational protocols & common lab reagents; supervises & delegates lab cleaning tasks, performs periodic equipment maintenance, writes and updates lab Chemical Hygiene Plan, maintains stem cell and cell culture reagents stocks for lab members.
