Job Description

PURPOSE OF POSITION:
The staff nurse in Surgery is a Registered Nurse who contributes to the development, implementation, and evaluation of the nursing care for the assigned patients on his/her unit. Under the direction and leadership of the Head Nurse or Assistant Director of Nursing, the staff nurse is guided by a thorough knowledge of nursing theory, principles and standards of quality nursing care.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides total nursing care to assigned patients through assessment, reassessment of patients' needs and initiates appropriate intervention.
  • Observes age-related considerations in the assessment and treatment of airway management.
  • Utilizes appropriate equipment/supplies in procedures for airway management.
  • Monitors established ventilator settings and takes appropriate action in response to ventilator alarms.
  • Activates the Airway Team and performs basic cardiac resuscitation until the team arrives.
  • Participates in medication management of the patient and follows medication administration policy and procedures.
  • Assesses and reassess pain using the age-specific pain rating scale in accordance with the policy.
  • Implements less restrictive measures prior to restraints initiation, identifies underlying causes of threatening/aggressive behaviors leading to use of restraints.
  • Assesses learning needs, preferences, barriers to learning, educational level in providing education to patient and significant other.
  • Performs and reports critical values as per policy.
  • Provides guidance, counseling and direction in according with policy and procedures of the hospital and the department.
  • Collaborates with the medical staff and interdisciplinary team in the provision of patient care.
  • Establishes realistic priorities and delegates tasks to ensure that work is completed in allotted time.
  • Coordinates collection of data, investigation and reporting of occurrences according to policy and procedures.
  • Implements and enforces regulatory agencies standards, policies and guidelines.
  • Recognizes limitations and seek appropriate assistance when needed.
  • Demonstrates awareness and acceptance of one's own cultural value and identity and accepts cultural differences in patient population and workforce, e.g. differences in values, communication styles, spirituality, and definitions of family.
  • Verbalize understanding of how differences may impact on patient and staff relationship.
  • Communicates effectively with patient/S.O and colleagues and works cooperatively with members of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Respects patient's confidentiality and privacy.
  • Discusses/observes documentation guidelines on hospital generic forms/records, unit specific forms, observes legibility and utilizes appropriate medical terminology and avoids the use of unapproved abbreviations.
  • Utilizes electronic medical record in picking up doctor's orders and documentation of medications, retrieves patient related data using patient ID query, audit trail.
  • Identifies opportunities for improvement for studies to improve patient care and coordinates data collection process, aggregates and analyzes data, ensures implementation of corrective actions and evaluate outcome.
  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary team and communicates finding of PI project with the nursing staff and the team.
  • Discusses and or implements role in internal and external disaster. The role of the Hospital Incident Command System.
  • Demonstrates proper hand washing and appropriate utilization of hand sanitizers. Uses personal protective equipment as appropriate and observes infection control policies.
  • Administers blood transfusion adhering to hospital policy and procedure.
  • Starts peripheral venous access with consideration for age specific needs, maintains care of IV site and documents findings.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the schedule, contraindications, dosage, side effects and appropriate storage of vaccines. Screens patient for Flu and Pneumonia immunization and follows guidelines.
  • Adheres to guidelines on abnormal test follow-up and patient notification process.
  • Discusses role and verbalizes understanding of Advance Directives: Health Care Proxy, Living Will, and Do Not Resuscitate.
  • Provides patient and family the necessary support to ensure considerate and respectful care, minimal pain and discomfort, and proper bereavement with consideration for age-specific, cultural and spiritual needs.
  • Performs systems (Head to Toe) assessment, monitors, evaluates, and documents patient's response.
  • Demonstrates knowledge in population-specific patient management.
  • Recognizes and reports safety hazards and initiates appropriate action to eliminate and prevent recurrences in the following areas:
    • Falls Prevention
    • Patient Safety
    • Staff Safety
    • Fire Safety
    • Electrical Safety
    • Equipment Safety
    • Environment Safety
Duties & Responsibilities

1. Identifies and discriminates between physical and psycho-social signs and symptoms. Selects and performs
those therapeutic measures which are essential for effective execution of the nursing regimen for assigned
patients/clients.
2. Develops, implements and continuously evaluates the nursing regimen for assigned patients/clients.
3. Records and maintains nursing care plans and progress notes on patients/clients to ensure continuity of care.
4. Interprets and reports responses of patients/clients to appropriate members of the health team.
5. Participates with interdisciplinary health team members to plan a comprehensive patient care program.
6. Determines and assigns those components of the nursing regimen which may be carried out by allied nursing
personnel.
7. Provides teaching, guidance and direction to allied nursing personnel in rendering patient care.
8. Participates in defining, implementing, maintaining and interpreting standards of nursing practice.
9. Participates in departmental and interdisciplinary conferences pertaining to policies and procedures affecting
nursing practice.
10. Participates in determining conditions, resources and policies essential to the delivery of nursing care
services.
11. Participates in development and maintenance of a system of evaluation of nursing care, practices and
procedures, including evaluation of nursing personnel.
12. Interprets philosophy and objectives of agency and Nursing Department to patients/clients, families and other
groups.
13. Maintains professional competence through participation in continuing education and other appropriate
learning experiences.
14. Performs other professional nursing activities as delegated by nursing service administration.

Minimum Qualifications

For individuals holding an unrestricted registered professional nursing license BEFORE July 1, 2020 in New York State, another state or United States territory:
1. A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; and
2. Valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).

For individuals issued a registered professional nursing license on or AFTER July 1, 2020, based on expected implementation of Chapter 502 of the Laws of 2017 and Chapter 380 of the Laws of 2018:
1. A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; and
a. A Bachelor’s of Science degree in Nursing or higher (or other nursing degree, as identified by NYS Education Department including Master of Science in Nursing, Doctor of Nursing Practice, Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Nursing or Doctor of Nursing Science) from an accredited college or university, registered with the NYSED; or
b. Obtains a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Nursing or higher, as described in “a” above, within ten (10) years of the date of initial licensure; and
2. Valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).
