We have an opening for a GEO Payload Manager/Payload Designer to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals in the Tactical Space organization. This position will be located in Dulles, VA. In this role, you will work in a primarily technical role on Commercial International MilSatCom or Civil communications satellite programs. This position focuses on design and production of effective communications systems within firm fixed price and schedule constraints. The team you will be supporting has 6-8 team members consisting of new business technical Sr. Engineers, Cost and Schedule analysts, and the Director/VP new business acquisition. In this role, you will participate/lead within a small team to define and describe robust RF solutions while working within system constraints on mass, power, and volume. To be successful you should have strong technical skills coupled with the ability to organize and direct the efforts of a small engineering team. In particular, you will be involved in: - Design and analysis of communications systems for commercial satellites, military satellites, and/or interplanetary applications. You must be familiar with RF analyses such as link budgets, digital modulation/coding, gain/loss budgets, noise figure, interference contributors, etc - Requirements dissemination from top-level customer document through subsystem-level definition to component-level specification. You will be expected to produce clear, concisely written documents that will be used as the technical basis for high dollar value procurements - Review and evaluate industry standards against proposed designs, and architect solutions to challenging mission profiles - Prepare and present design reviews for internal and external customers. You will have regular interaction with the internal engineering and program management team as well as the external customer - Requirements verification based on customer’s top-level requirements compared to subcontractor and prime actual implementation. You should be able to concisely summarize findings and present them to the end customer - Subcontractor management (some travel may be required) and manufacturing interface definition including performance specification, interface control drawing, and statement of work generation. You will work with potential subcontractors to ensure any technical solution meets the top-level customer's needs while satisfying system and program constraints - Support integration and test of the communications system including unit-level functional and environmental testing, spacecraft level planning & testing, and in-orbit checkout. Basic Qualifications - Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field (ideally Electrical Engineering) and 9 years of experience; or a Master’s degree with 7 years of experience; or a PhD with 4 years of experience - Some combination of the following course work: microwave theory, satellite communications, radio-wave propagation, electromagnetics, or antennas with a good understanding of communications and microwave theory - Familiarity with RF analyses such as link budgets, digital modulation/coding, gain/loss budgets, noise figure, interference contributors, etc. - Ability to review and evaluate industry standards against proposed designs, and architect solutions to challenging mission profiles - Ability to work with others from engineering and non-engineering disciplines in a fast-paced team environment - Good oral presentation skills and comfort with customer interaction. Ability to write technical documents clearly and concisely - Well organized and able to keep track of and make progress on multiple simultaneous tasks - Strong skills in Microsoft Office (particularly Excel, Word and PowerPoint) - Limited domestic and international travel required. Occasional 2nd or 3rd shift work and/or weekend work required - US Citizenship Preferred Qualifications: - MSEE (or related field) a strong plus - Experience leading small engineering teams in development or production of RF systems - Familiar with engineering analysis tools such as MATLAB or Mathcad, and support tools such as Visual Basic for Applications - Experience with modelling simulation software (e.g. Satellite Tool Kit, GRASP, etc.) - Experience with microwave component/system measurement - Experience with digital modulation/demodulation schemes and mechanically or electrically steered phased arrays for high data rate applications - Experience in a variety of RF frequency bands (UHF, L, C, Ku, Ka, Q, V-Bands) The Northrop Grumman Tactical Space Division is a strategic partner specializing in commercial and classified partnerships with the design, delivery, operation and sustainment of satellites and human spacecraft.
