SUMMARY OF JOB FUNCTION:
Reports to the Clinic Coordinator for daily operations and reports directly to the Director of Nursing for competence in performing procedures. This position assists in team leading, assigning, and directing daily tasks to the Medical Assistants. Demonstrates good understanding of responsible patient care functions, utilizing broad knowledge in techniques, methods, procedures, ensuring that all patient care areas are safely managed and well organized. As a team member in the Patient Centered Health Home, the Senior Medical Assistant, under the direction of the clinician, collaborates with clinic management, nursing staff, and clerical staff to maintain high standards of patient care with the patient at the center.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Provide excellent customer service skills to both co-workers and patient population allowing patient to know who by name is providing them service.
· Uses GFHN Health Information System to document patient care information, and receive task from clinicians.
· Leads Medical Assistants in their daily job responsibilities to assure efficient patient care.
· Acts as a liaison in an atmosphere of cooperation, teamwork, and clear communication between medical and clerical staff. Demonstrates role modeling in the area of customer services as it relates to high standards of establishing professional and respective relationships with all staff, clinicians, and patients.
· Assures adequate staffing of Medical Assistants for all existing shifts in the Back Office
· Sr. Medical Assistants will reassign daily work schedules as needed for staffing shortages and communicate to the Clinic Coordinator
· Works with the Clinic Coordinator in assigning mentor for newly hired Medical Assistants.
· Supports department by assisting in the Medical Assistant role when short staffed and need arises.
· Huddles with team members; assures that medical assistants participate in their prospective daily team huddles.
· Monitors Medical Assistant’s performance, notes problems and after consultation with Clinic Coordinator assists in implementing plan of correction.
· Monitors patient flow and interacts with Medical Assistants to resolve any issues as they occur in relation to patient process.
· Available to clinicians when problems arise during the work day, and advises Clinic Coordinator of any problems not resolved.
· Performs procedures/treatments/tests per clinician’s instructions/standing orders to include breathing treatments, ear washes, etc. as trained and as needed.
· Performs as a role model in communication skills, customer service skills demonstrating respect and courtesy for patients and all staff.
· Initiates and promotes an unbiased team centered work environment with strong work ethics and ability to lead by example.
· Assist in coordinating vaccine monitoring and relocation of vaccines on any power outage event.
· Participates in conjunction with Clinic Coordinator to interview Medical Assistants, recommends for hiring thereof.
· Provides input to Clinic Coordinator in regards to performance evaluations of team members
· Become an active participant of the Medical Team and the Emergency Response Team when asked to do so.
· Performs as a lead in ordering of vaccine inventory, follows vaccine inventory guidelines as noted on vaccine protocol, and responsible to complete yearly VFC recertification or updates.
Clinical Skills Responsibilities :
· Prepares for visit by gathering patient information such as lab results, ER/consultant’s recent visits
· Prepare patient for exam accurately according to type of exam
· Reconcile/Compare and confirms medications on patient’s Medication List in the Health Information System
· Taking and Recording Vital Signs accurately
· Taking and Recording patient’s Weights accurately
· Collecting, explaining, and preparing CLIA Waiver laboratory test
· Perform Pregnancy testing to include presumptive eligibility
· Pull patient immunization records from CAIR System on every visit, submitting record to clinician, so they can confirm vaccine status
· Practice proper immunization techniques, using the seven rights of medication administration.
· Complete patient discharge plan post visit to include future appointments/labs and clinician instructions if applicable
· Assists clinician and patient during the exam/treatment, providing translation and other assistance as needed
· Monitors patient in exam rooms and waiting rooms and gives them an update on expected waiting time
· Perform patient education/direction as needed
· Document and use Health Information System as trained
· Arrange, stock, clean exam rooms in between patients
· Disinfect exam rooms as needed
· Completes daily check list of glucose meters and oxygen tanks.
· Disposition of contaminated waste
· Complete pap smear and mammogram follow-up procedure as trained and as needed
· Order and maintain exam room supplies for daily restocking
· Mentoring skills, leadership skills to be able to give direction in a team spirit
· Maintain a safe environment for the patient
· Provide basic emergency care ability to call 911 using appropriate information
· Demonstrate general principles of cleanliness and infection control and Nail Hygiene Policy
· Use safe body mechanics when lifting or moving object or patient
· Use of Stryker Chairs on emergency responses
· Maintain patient confidentiality as per GFHN, Inc. protocol
· Abide by legal/union guidelines and enforce patient/employee confidentiality
· Must be able to get along with others and do conflict resolution
· Have a good understanding that employment is with GFHN; and that flexibility to be relocated from one site to another to meet staffing demands is a requirement
· Flexibility in other assigned duties as per job description.

REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:
· Requires three years of experience or equivalency as a GFHN Medical Assistant.
· High School graduate or equivalent.
· Medical Assistant Certificate from an approved Medical Assistant program as required by the State of California.
· CPR Certified.
· It is a requirement to demonstrate competencies in all job responsibilities as outlined by daily task
· Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
· It is imperative to demonstrate courtesy and respect to clinicians, co-workers, patients and clients. Interact in a courteous helpful manner with patients, clients and staff.
· Work effectively with a diverse population and positively in a teamwork environment.

Because of time- crucial nature of the medical profession dealing with patient flow demands and emergencies medical assistants need to be very good at time management. Ability to keep up with daily patient flow demands.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to fingers, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk or hear.
- Ability to sit at a desk or computer terminal for 5-7 hours daily.
- The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Works inside & outside including motor vehicle travel between sites.
