Job Description
Overview: Delta Dental of Washington is looking for a Senior Account to join our Finance team and perform senior accountant duties for Delta Dental of Washington and its related entities. We are looking for someone to preform general accounting, financial reporting, and analytical duties as assigned as well as provide operational support to the finance team and other departments when necessary.
The Senior Accountant will report directly to the Senior Accounting Manager and will be expected to work closely with the operating departments and other functional areas on a daily basis.

Responsibilities: ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned, as appropriate.
  • Financial Statements: participate in preparation of monthly GAAP financial statements and monthly reports. This includes balance sheet, profit & loss, and cash flow statements on a consolidated basis.
  • General Ledger: prepare and record routine journal entries and month-end accruals. Review and approve journal entries prepared by other accounting staff.
  • Payroll Processing: process bi-weekly payroll for hourly and salary employees (including multi-state processing). Work with Human Resources department to ensure benefits are accurately reflected.
  • Investment Accounting: ensure accurate reporting of quarterly and annual statutory filings. Ensure proper valuation and recording of investments.
  • Balance Sheet Reconciliations: perform account reconciliations in a timely manner. Resolve reconciling items and variances each month. Review and approve reconciliations prepared by other accounting staff.
  • Finance Systems: ensure automated interfaces between financial reporting system and other systems are functioning as intended. Assist in the maintenance of such systems and make recommendations for improvement. Assist in initiating IT service tickets for the finance department.
  • Audit Support: assist as necessary with external and internal audits. Prepare supporting documentation and answer auditor’s questions. Coordinate with other departments in addressing auditor requests in a timely manner.
  • Business Taxes: Assist in preparation of corporate 990’s, 1120, B&O and personal property tax returns. Also coordinate, prepare and review data for 1099 reporting.
  • Corporate Banking: monitor online bank accounts as necessary. Initiate and approve required banking transactions authorized. Assist with primary banking liaisons, handling unusual bank transactions and company credit card issues.
  • Fixed Assets: ensure items are accurately reflected in the fixed asset database (FAS), such as timely additions, disposals and depreciation. Reconcile FAS to the general ledger.
  • Broker Commissions: Coordinate/review reconciliation with A/P and Sales, investigate discrepancies.
  • Cash Flow Analysis: monitor cash inflows and outflows and provide analysis and projections on cash balances.
  • Process Documentation: maintain written accounting policies and procedures that model effective workflows. Review and update annually; as necessary.
  • Innovation: identify, analyze and develop continued process improvements to ensure department is operating in an efficient manner and the use of resources are maximized; while maintaining a high level of accuracy. Strong commitment to continuing process improvements.

  • Understand and prepare GAAP financial statements.
  • Proficient in Windows and Word; with advanced knowledge of Excel.
  • Experience with financial accounting systems and report writing.

  • Reconcile and analyze general ledger accounts.
  • Prepare financial reports that are accurate and complete.
  • Work well in a team environment; yet be self-directed in work and time management.
  • Be responsive to internal and external customer needs.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCEBachelor's degree in Accounting or related business field; or seven years’ experience in the accounting field; or equivalent combination of education and experience. CPA preferred.
MATHEMATICAL and LANGUAGE SKILLSAbility to perform moderate to advanced mathematical operations. Ability to read, analyzes, and interprets common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to effectively present information to staff, top management, public groups, and/or board of directors.
REASONING ABILITYAbility to conceptualize accounting problems and implement solutions. Ability to define problems, collect necessary data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
