Job Description

Summary of Duties: The CCT RN is a critical care trained Registered Nurse in the State of California experienced in the care of critically ill patients within the scope of the Emergency Medical System. The CCT RN develops a Transport Nurse Care Plan unique to each patient and the transport involved which includes; assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. This is accomplished by comprehensive review of patient history and presentation at the sending location, interaction with sending and receiving staff, interventions required during transport, trip conditions projected, special equipment needed, and ability to identify and access additional resources as needed for the safe transportation of critically ill patients as ordered by a physician. The CCT RN will use standardized procedures (Physician Transport Orders) as developed by the Medical Director and the SCT RN Coordinator to initially focus patient care needs and add additional orders as appropriate in collaboration with each sending physician for the unique patient needs in each clinical transport provided.
ESSENTIAL JOB TASKS:

  • Knowledgeable of the SCT RN Policy and Procedure Manual and able to use it in the dynamic interfacility EMS clinical environment
  • Emergently intervene according to ACLS Guidelines and standardized procedures when patients become clinically unstable
  • Maintains and initiates as appropriate all levels of nursing care using the nursing process and within standardized nursing scope of practice for pediatric and adult patients during transports
  • Documents history, nursing assessments, care and responses on the CCT Patient Care Record in a legible and complete fashion
  • Uses the Physician Transport Orders as a standardized procedure, include collaborative orders from sending physician to maintain or initiate anticipated special care needs during transport
  • Safe operation, accountability and care of CCT RN equipment
  • Drug safety and security maintained at all times according to policy
  • Collaboratively leads the Critical Care Transport team through professional knowledge and interaction with the two EMT attendants during each transport
  • Establish and maintain a professional nursing relationship with each patient from first introduction and receiving report, through the transport, ending only when professional hand-off occurs to an RN at receiving or diverted location and patient or family are aware CCT RN is leaving. In the event of a wait and return trip, the professional relationship will be maintained in immediate stand-by during off site or other facility provided procedures and then relieved in returning patient to point of origin facility hand off to originating RN
  • Participates in QA process and activities
  • Maintains professional licensure and certificates as per SCT P & P
  • Follows all company policies and procedures
  • Completes daily check out, replaces supplies as needed and performs daily Narcotic log
  • Completes initial training and then annual updates and competencies annually
  • Completes 60 continuing education units every two years, 30 of which must relate to transports
  • Demonstrates ongoing effective and professional communication with all internal and external stakeholders
  • Clinically lead and instruct EMT crew in care concepts, maintain understanding of LAC EMT scope of practice in order not to exceed their safe function
  • Maintain understanding of EMS system operations

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Current and unencumbered licensure as a registered nurse in California
  • Minimum of 2 years full time experience in adult critical care or ER is required
  • Current BLS, ACLS, and PALS certification from the AHA is required
  • Valid and unencumbered California driver’s license
  • Strong ability to critically think and perform in stressful situations
  • Strong ability to operate independently
  • Able to lift 40 pounds from the ground without accommodation
  • Climbing in and out of ambulances and walking quickly to and from ambulances
  • Able to work in a loud and dynamic environment (moving ambulance)
