Summary:
The Solventless Extraction Specialist has the responsibility of extracting, refining and fractionating cannabinoids and terpenes from cannabis plant material into a concentrated form. This individual maintains a focus on executing various separation techniques without the use of chemical solvents. They are responsible for operating extraction and processing instrumentation and maintains knowledge of all processes and manufacturing. This position reports to Operations Management and works directly with and provides support and leadership to all processing technicians. The Specialist performs, oversees and assists personnel to perform all the tasks necessary to process extracts and produce various formulated products. While maintaining compliant operation, quality standards and product specifications, the individual will uphold the mission, vision and values of the Firelands Scientific team.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Operation and tending to solventless extraction and refinement equipment that processes cannabis plant material into concentrates and finished goods in addition to oversight of duties performed by processing technicians
- Oversees and tends to the parameters on all equipment used for separations to ensure process efficiency is optimized and quality standards are maintained. Oversees any equipment troubleshooting and light repairs.
- Records all analytical data within each step of the extraction process and input the data on extraction batch log spreadsheets, METRC and/or other regulatory databases.
- Oversees the sanitation and maintenance of equipment and laboratory facility following current good manufacturing practices and standard operating procedures
- Documents the throughput of all consumables needed for the separations processes and prepares requisitions as necessary.
- Writes and revises SOPs according to new methods to optimize separation processes.
- Trains processing and production technicians on SOP’s and ongoing method developments.
- Execute day-to-day processing operations as they pertain to workflow, extraction, analysis, production quotas and deadlines.
- Operates highly sophisticated extraction equipment; processing concentrates and extracts.
- Oversight of quality assurance and compliant operations within solventless extraction and formulation processes.
- Maintaining inventory records of supplies, materials, and equipment, and preparing requisitions as needed.
- Storing supplies and equipment, disposal of waste according to guidelines, and keeping laboratory, storerooms and working areas clean.
- Maintains safety data sheets for all department chemicals and products.
- Works with director of cultivation to build production planning to support the raw material needs for solventless extraction. Evaluates and works to identify proper genetics and practices to maximize quality and efficiency. Makes recommendations to support future growth and excellence.
- Maintains strict inventory records of all plant materials, chemicals and equipment used in the laboratory and documents production by completing forms, reports, logs, and records.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Professional Development: Maintains medical cannabis extraction and production knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
- Oversight of processing technicians.
Relevant Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Expertise in industry quality standards, technologies and innovation for solventless extraction, formulation and manufacturing.
- Knowledge of and hands-on experience with supercritical extraction and solvent evaporation desired.
- Scientific laboratory procedure experience and techniques as used in a chemical laboratory.
- Experience with scientific laboratory equipment.
- Health and safety practices and precautions applicable to a chemistry laboratory
- Experience in proper, safe handling and disposal of harmful chemicals, substances, and hazardous wastes.
- Capabilities with computer systems, software, and hardware common to laboratories recordkeeping procedures
- Thorough understanding of state and local medical marijuana laws and how they apply to the operations
- Excellent communication skills
- Effective time-management and ability to multi-task
- Able to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks and requests
- At least 21 years of age or older
- Must be able to pass a background check
- Long periods of prolonged standing and sitting
- Ability to observe and assess material that deviates from established company standards
- Hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to perform manual labor tasks
- Must be capable of performing repetitive tasks for an extended period of time
- Some crouching or holding uncomfortable positions for extended periods of time
Physical Requirements:
- Required to routinely lift 40 - 45 pounds.
- Standing for long periods of time.
- Ability to work overtime as required.
Work Environment:
- Similar to a busy manufacturing facility or warehouse
- Occasional exposure to loud machines (ear protection provided) and extremely bright lights (eye protection provided)
- Constant interaction with internal and external stakeholders
