The Base Elements team at Garmin has an exciting opportunity for a full-time C++ Software Engineer 1 with strong math and coding skills who believes that variety is the spice of life. This position offers you the chance to work on a variety of technologies that bring Garmin’s consumer products to life. You will help develop graphics routines, font implementations, file systems, and memory drivers essential to devices ranging from high-end wearables and cycling computers to automotive and marine navigation systems.
In addition to designing new software and performing maintenance on existing products, this position includes running and testing software using debuggers, emulators and simulators; performing software releases and software quality assurance activities; and working collaboratively and professionally with a variety of Garmin associates in all the consumer product segments.
In this role, you will develop moderately complex software, create and execute designs for small sets of new functionalities and perform as Lead Software Engineer for small projects or sub projects. Other essential functions include:
- Develops moderately complex software in C or C++ consistently following Garmin’s coding standards and in accordance with applicable software development methodology and release processes
- Utilizes software engineering tools such as configuration management systems, build processes, and debuggers in the software development process
- Creates and executes designs for small sets of new functionalities as part of a software project
- Collaborates and adds value through participation in peer code reviews, providing comments and suggestions
- Provides reliable solutions to a variety of problems using sound problem solving techniques
- Performs technical root cause analysis and outlines corrective action for given problems
- Estimate level of effort, evaluate new options of similar technology, offer suggestions to improve processes, and provide comments on some electrical design aspects
- Apply Garmin’s Mission Statement and Quality Policy and enthusiastically exhibit a desire to see Garmin succeed
- Works collaboratively and professionally with other Garmin associates in cross functional teams to achieve goals
- Apply a sense of urgency, commitment and focus on the right priorities in developing solutions in a timely fashion

- Participate in product and/or application definition activities including feature analysis and system tradeoffs
- Perform other duties as necessary
Qualified candidates will possess a Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Math or Physics or a technical field (such as CIS or IT) from a four-year college or university OR an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. Other qualifications include:
- Must demonstrate proficiency in coding in C or C++
- Outstanding academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule)
- Demonstrates proficient knowledge and utilization of engineering tools necessary for successful performance of the essential functions of this job description
- Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
- Must demonstrate proficient ability to capture and document software requirements
- Previous experience working in a team environment
Desirable experience includes:
- Proficiency in geometry, trigonometry, and/or linear algebra
- Familiarity with TrueType font formats
- Familiarity with Unicode
- Experience writing code on and for Linux
- Experience debugging complex problems on embedded systems
- Experience with Version control packages (Git)
- Experience with Python
- Experience with Java
