Job Description
The Social Media and Video Editor will contribute to making WTOP the leading provider of local, timely and relevant news and information for the Washington, D.C., metro region. Reporting to the Digital News Director, the Social Media and Video Editor will oversee WTOP's day-to-day distribution of news and engagement efforts through social media channels including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, Reddit and YouTube, among others. They will help in shooting and editing video as well as live-streaming projects. In addition, they will use WTOP's social media platforms to expose current and new consumers to WTOP's audio and digital platforms.
  • Coordinate with news directors, reporters, broadcast editors, digital editors and other members of the social media team to inform news consumers by promoting the biggest news stories of the day across WTOP's social platforms in a timely manner
  • Create social media posts that fit the WTOP brand to engage current WTOP consumers and attract new consumers
  • Manage breaking news across WTOP's social media platforms
  • Shoot and edit high-quality videos with appealing and appropriate content for use across WTOP's digital platforms
  • Coordinate and produce live streamed video events on WTOP.com and its social media platforms
  • Work with third-party video partners to provide the most relevant video content on WTOP's social networks
  • Work with WTOP marketing department on projects, as needed
  • Examine emerging social platforms and tools, and implement those that offer opportunities for the WTOP brand
  • Train newsroom staff on best practices for social media
  • Be part of a team to develop new and innovative content for WTOP's various distribution platforms
  • Other duties as assigned

  • 2-3 years social media and video experience in a newsroom environment preferred
  • In-depth understanding of social media and the way news consumers interact with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Reddit, LinkedIn, YouTube, Snapchat, TikTok and other emerging social media platforms
  • Experience writing engaging posts for Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, including Facebook Live events, Instagram stories, Twitter Fleets, and video streaming live news events
  • Ability to create and edit videos using Adobe Premiere, FinalCut or similar editing program
  • Be comfortable in front of the camera for video explainers, interviews and reporting
  • Ability to work quickly during breaking news events
  • Understanding of social media and its relationship with news consumers, online marketing and increasing traffic to WTOP's distribution platforms
  • Ability to increase engagement and communicate with news consumers
  • Excellent time management and multitasking skills
  • Proficiency in Photoshop
  • Excellent writing skills under tight deadlines
  • Excellent news judgment, preferably with a background in D.C.-area news
  • Attention to detail with content, including grammar, punctuation and fact checking
  • Ability to change directions quickly and adapt as needed to news events of the day
  • Thorough knowledge of news, current events and pop culture
  • High level of initiative required and the ability to work independently
  • Degree in journalism, communications or related field, preferred
  • Work in compliance with company policies and procedures
  • Maintain a positive and cooperative rapport with staff, management, and third-party vendors
  • Project appropriate company image with respect to dress and demeanor
  • Ability to work established schedule and other hours, as needed
  • Valid driver's license. A driving record check will be processed.
