SUPERVISES:
There are no direct reports with this position.
POSITION SUMMARY:
Under limited supervision, the Shipping and/or Receiving Lead oversees the preparation, handling, and shipment of completed products through the shipping department, to final customer destinations; and/or the receipt of inbound shipments of materials and coordinates activities involved in unloading, verifying, inspecting and confirming orders. Employees in this job classification lead staff in processing shipments according to established procedures that ensure order accuracy, completeness and condition. This job requires knowledge of shipping and receiving processes and procedures, and the ability to operate material handling equipment and lead a work team.
TYPICAL LEAD SHIPPING DUTIES:
1. *Oversees the preparation and shipment of outbound customer orders within the distribution/warehouse environment.
2. *Schedules staff in anticipation of work volume. Prioritizes and assigns work orders among staff, coordinates flow to maintain volume and efficiency, and reallocates work in response to changes.
3. *Performs shipping tasks as necessary to meet work volume demands or staffing shortages. This may include preparing items for shipment, determining method of shipment, and maintaining records.
4. *Identifies and searches for urgent shipments, and prioritizes accordingly to meet critical deadlines.
5. *Responds to customer claims by researching records, searching through historical databases, identifying problem, providing information, and either offering to make corrections or referring to appropriate staff.
6. *Tracks work volumes using spreadsheets and computing average workflow per given time periods. Compiles or summarizes data to illustrate trends and patterns, and provides reports and spreadsheets to management.
7. *Contacts and works with IT staff to resolve system problems or application failures, or to provide input regarding system or software changes
8. *Participates in after hour order support program for critical/emergency customer requirements.
9. Performs other duties and special projects as assigned.
TYPICAL LEAD RECEVING DUTES:
1. *Oversees material receiving activities. Evaluates shipping notices, bills of lading, invoices, purchase orders and other records to determine receiving priorities and work assignments in line with established procedures.
2. *Prioritizes job tasks and assigns to team members based on urgency or age of materials, and reallocates to accommodate changing volume. Performs receiving tasks as necessary to meet work volume demands or staffing shortages.
3. *Coordinates loading and unloading of freight from trucks and other storage containers and vehicles. Determines space requirements and lays out position of items shipped.
4. *Instructs staff in the safe and proper operation of hand trucks, forklifts, conveyors and other material handling equipment.
5. *Coordinates materials receiving activities from inbound carriers to facility docking areas, and from receiving platforms to storage and work areas.
6. *Engages key planning department personnel for inbound material disposition.
7. *Works with inbound carriers to determine delivery schedules based on projected volumes, types of products to be delivered, and internal capacities.
8. *Works closely with other department leads and coordinators to determine capacity requirements or constraints
9. Performs other duties and special projects as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:High School Diploma or GED
CERTIFICATES OR LICENSES REQUIRED:The following licenses or certificates may be required depending on local, state and/or contract requirements:
Forklift Certification Valid Driver's License
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:Employees must have the ability to perform the following physical demands for extended periods of time with or without assistance:
WORK ENVIRONMENT:Work is performed in a commissary, warehouse, or distribution environment with forklifts, material handling and production equipment. May be exposed to noise from equipment and depending on external weather conditions exposure to heat, cold, wind, and rain.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- One or more years of related experience in shipping and/or receiving or warehousing;
- Knowledge of commonly used shipping and receiving processes and practices;
- Experience operating a forklift, RF Scan Gun, Pallet Ryder and other material handling equipment;
- Ability to communicate effectively and respond to questions and requests from team, customers and others;
- Effective written communication skills using appropriate business English;
- Human relations skills to maintain effective working relationships with team;
- Effective customer service skills;
- Intermediate computer literacy including knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, database and presentation software;
- Basic mathematical ability including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division;
- Demonstrated customer service, problem solving and common sense skills.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:High School Diploma or GED
