Job Description

SRI International's Advanced Technology and Systems Division (ATSD) performs research across a wide range of disciplines. SRI specializes in transitioning technology from basic R&D to fieldable prototypes for both US government and commercial customers.

SRI ATSD has an immediate opening for a Senior Research Engineer within the Applied Physics Laboratory. The Applied Physics Lab conducts R&D in radar, communications, Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT), Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR), quantum sensing, and machine learning. We are seeking a candidate with experience in RF systems specifically related to radar, communications, and EW systems. This candidate will be expected contribute on current programs and quickly grow into a task leader.

A successful applicant will have a deep understanding of radar design, development and signal processing as applied to both fields. Experience with Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), Software Defined Radios (SDRs), or Graphic Processing Units (GPUs) for the purpose of managing and processing radar data is required. The applicant shall also have experience contributing to white papers and technical proposals and be willing and able to brief US government customers.

Qualifications

  • BS, MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering or related engineering discipline
  • US Citizenship required, with the ability to obtain and/or maintain a government security clearance

The candidate must have experience in:

  • Radar and communication system design and development
  • Research program development related to RF systems
  • Direct experience with Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), Software Defined Radios (SDRs), or Graphic Processing Units (GPUs) for the purpose of managing and processing radar data
  • Radar signal processing including matched filtering, range-Doppler, monopulse, or backprojection imaging techniques
  • System engineering including integration, testing and evaluation of prototype systems
  • Customer briefing and presenting
  • Record of careful, detailed, results-oriented work
  • Capable of working in a team environment and managing multiple priorities
  • Capable of reviewing technical work of others and providing actionable feedback
  • Exceptional communication and presentation skills, especially when communicating complex ideas to a diverse audience
Desirable, but not required skills include:
  • An active TS clearance and past experience with classified RF work is desirable
  • Prior experience managing Government-funded R&D programs
  • Prior experience writing Government proposals
  • Clear, concise communication of radar and communications control interfaces to software engineers to customers
  • FPGA design including concept development, code development, simulation, and verification on hardware
  • Advanced radar and RF communication waveform design and usage
  • Digital Signal Processing (DSP) theory and implementation
  • C/C++, Python, Matlab, and/or Julia coding expertise
  • Detailed knowledge of one or more RF protocol physical layer
  • Microprocessor embedded software development
