Our work matters – robotics is transforming the world of commerce. Every day our intelligent robots are responsible for getting food and merchandise to thousands of stores across North America. We’re an industry changer – we created the first and only fully autonomous, end-to-end supply chain solution. Today, we are driving towards even bigger ideas – and we have the people, technology and leadership to fully realize these aspirations. We have the excitement and ambition of a startup with the benefits and resources of a proven organization. What You'll Do Your ideas don’t go on the shelf, they go out into the world. If you want to solve important global challenges that involve technology, business, science and logistics, we want you on the team. Every improvement, idea and invention you make gets tested and quickly implemented because our solutions are already in use by some of the nation’s largest retailers. In this role you will: The Automation Controls Development team aims to be at the forefront of innovation and technology in automation controls. Our mission is to research new platforms, utilize advanced hardware, and push the limits of technology to build a world-class automation platform that minimizes development time, reduces commissioning time, and eliminates unplanned downtime.

We are looking for talented, forward thinking controls engineers to join us in developing standards, specifications, and procedures that are critical both for internally built equipment and for vendors designing manufacturing equipment for Symbotic. Join us in building libraries of modular code and templates that will be used as the building blocks for Symbotic manufacturing equipment across the entire company. Together we will create tools to automate steps of the development and deployment process such as historical regression testing, synthetic data generation.

As a Senior Manager, Industrial Electrical Engineer, you will be part of a team that is responsible for writing and owning the electrical standards, specifications, and procedures covering topics including but not limited to hardware, sizing, connections, naming, installation, testing/inspection. You will have an opportunity to grow through research and development as we test and approve new hardware for Symbotic Approved Component List to standardize manufacturing controls hardware across the entire company. Our goal is to simplify equipment controls hardware by selecting components and designing topologies that reduce overall part count and variety, and to drive our controls hardware standards towards IP67 field-distributed hardware to save money, simplify electrical design, simplify troubleshooting, and eliminate custom control panels. Our team will build out libraries of electrical and pneumatic macros/templates for each of the approved components. These libraries will be used as the building blocks for manufacturing equipment across the entire company. Additionally, we will design 480/240/110VAC and 24VDC electrical schematics for common industrial automation equipment such as robots, servos, VFDs, vision, pneumatics, dispensing, welding, fastening, etc.

Taking advantage of standardization, we will create programs and tools to automate various steps in the development process such as scripts for auto-generating electrical schematics, designing OT network topology strategies that optimize the equipment for remote accessibility, diagnostics, backups, data collection, and cybersecurity, and specifying (ANSI/RIA15.06/OSHA compliant) control reliable safety systems for safeguarding robots, gantries, conveyors, and other high volume manufacturing equipment. By validating all of these internally developed standards and tools on production-representative lab equipment and virtual simulations you will have the ability to establish and maintain high quality and robust behavior throughout all implementations.

Collaborating both internally to Symbotic and externally with vendors and suppliers is a crucial aspect of this role. We are responsible for providing guidance to suppliers in their efforts to follow the standards that we have set. We will also assist in reviewing and approving electrical and pneumatic schematics from vendors delivering automation equipment to Symbotic.

What You'll Need
  • BS/MS Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or equivalent.
  • 10+ Years of relevant experience in the field of electrical design for industrial automation. 5+ years experience managing a team of Engineers.
  • Experience developing with Autocad Electrical, ePlan EEC, EEC1, Cogineer or API, WSCAD Project Wizard or AI module, AutoCAD VBA.
  • Familiarity with common controls hardware components used in high volume manufacturing.
  • Hands-on experience integrating high volume manufacturing equipment.
  • In-depth knowledge of Safety standards (ANSI/RIA15.06, OSHA).
  • In-depth knowledge of Electrical Standards (NFPA79, National Electric Code, UL508A).
  • Experience creating electrical schematics for a variety of manufacturing applications.
  • Experience developing and maintaining reusable templates & macros using ePlan, WSCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, or equivalent.
  • Understanding of common fieldbus communication protocols such as Ethernet/IP.
Nice to Have
  • Familiarity with installation and wiring practices
  • Experience with PLC, HMI development
  • Experience with pneumatic systems design
  • Some familiarity with facilities requirements, such as power, air, water
  • Experience with communicating engineering requirements to and managing design sources
