Terracon is growing, and we are hiring a Senior Engineering Geologist, Geological Engineer or Geotechnical Engineer in the Phoenix, Arizona, Denver, Colorado or Salt Lake City, Utah regions to lead our growing Geohazard and Rock Engineering practice! In this role you will be responsible for providing consulting services related to geologic hazards and rock mechanics for a broad array of projects and clients, including small- and large-scale commercial developments, transportation projects, industrial facilities and energy projects throughout the area. This work may include performing and/or leading field investigations, engineering and geological analysis, calculations, and recommendations, design and development of plans and specifications for geologic hazard mitigation, observation and inspection, and the writing, preparation, and review of related reports for the services provided. Review drawings and construction to assure compliance with plans and specifications. Prepare proposals and cost estimates, track and evaluate project progress, budgets, and recommend changes. Research and resolve design and construction problems. Respond to emergency call outs. Assign, review, and evaluate laboratory or field data for inclusion in reports. Role, Responsibilities, and Experience:
- Lead in the development of Geologic Hazards and Rock Engineering for Terracon in the Rocky Mountain region.
- Proficient understanding of geologic principles to both engineering geology and geotechnical engineering projects
- Proficient use of rock mechanics and structural geological principles involving discontinuity mapping, stereonet and kinematic analysis
- Strong understanding of geologic hazards such as landslides, rockfall, debris flows, sinkholes, mine subsidence, etc. and remedial actions
- Understanding of risk assessments surrounding geologic hazards and potential remedial actions.
- Strong understanding of how to assess risk, investigate, evaluate alternative actions, and develop strategies for remediation of geologic hazards
- Strong understanding of design, detailing and specification of geologic hazard mitigation methods.
- Manages unique or complex projects involving geologic hazards.
- Serves as technical expert and leader with the authority to work independently, make decisions, and manage projects from initial inception to completion.
- Plans, schedules, conducts, and/or coordinates engineering work involving conventional geologic and engineering practices but may include a variety of innovative exploration techniques.
- Knowledgeable on characterization, analysis, and control of groundwater and its hydrogeologic setting.
- Experienced with subsurface investigative methods including conventional drilling, angle-drilling, geophysical surface and borehole surveys, acoustic and televiewer logging.
- Understanding of soils and rock characteristics in the Colorado and Utah region
- Performs geological and geotechnical analyses, prepare proposals and reports
- Knowledgeable on Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) and their use in the investigation of geologic hazards including photogrammetry and lidar.
- Leads team on responses to RFPs related to project pursuits involving Engineering Geology and Geotechnical Engineering
- Strong understanding of instrumentation and monitoring systems in-situ and remote applications
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Geology, Geological Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or Civil Engineering coupled with a Minimum 10 years’ experience.
- Professional Engineer (PE) and/or Professional Geologist (PG) registration.
- Strong understanding of geologic hazard investigation, design, and remediation
- Technical expertise in rock mechanics and laboratory testing of soils and rock
- Proficient with engineering geology and geotechnical software such as gINT, Slope/W, SLIDE, ShapemetriX, DIPS, RocData, RocPlane, Swedge, RocTopple, Rocfall and CRSP, Word, Excel, MathCAD
- Experience with MicroStation and/or AutoCAD
- Valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history.
- Ability to work collaboratively with other team members, internally and externally
- Responsible for conceptualizing the initial design and/or investigative approach for a major phase of a large project or have overall responsibility for the engineering work on a project of moderate scope.
- Knowledgeable and experienced with blasting including pre-blast surveys, blasting design, pre-split and production blasting, and vibration monitoring.
- Lead technical training and make informed decisions based upon state-of-the-art technology issues.
- Provide leadership of marketing, sales and business development activities. Must possess excellent communication skills.
- Lead safety efforts for team and ensure team follows safety rules and guideline. Responsible for creating and modeling a safe work environment; demonstrating safe practices. Promote pre-task planning for all projects.
- Review design and construction submittals for compliance with design standards, project requirements and contract documents
- Provide supervision and mentoring to junior staff on project teams; provides leadership that involves planning, organizing, and coordination of work.
