Job Description

Performs screening of gynecologic and non-gynecologic cases on a daily basis; identifying all cases with abnormal findings for pathologist review, and marking all abnormal cells in a clear, accepted manner. Utilizes laboratory database system to record all findings and produce accurate reports. Highlights cases appropriate for QM studies or high risk review. Accurately charges all appropriate procedures for assigned cases. Processes and prepares both gyn and non-gyn specimens in absence of cytology technician, or as needed. Maintains knowledge of current procedures, safety requirements and compliance guidelines as they pertain to the cytology section. Uses and maintains microscope in an appropriate manner. Maintains high proficiency in cytology screening, with ongoing education and training, and satisfies government mandated proficiency requirements. Maintains an accurate individual screening log as required by inspecting agencies.

Qualifications: EDUCATION
Baccalaureate degree in Cytotechnology or an equivalent science, including one year of cytology training; fulfill the requirements of the states of Connecticut and New York
EXPERIENCE
5 years preferred, to be able to QC other cytotechnologists
LICENSURE
Current certification by ASCP in cytotechnology; fulfill the requirements of the states of CT and NY for cytotechnologists; certification in Thinprep and Surepath preferred
SPECIAL SKILLS
Complex discrimination of cellular features for cytology screening. Experience with cytopreparation of gynecologic and non-gynecologic specimens. Ability to collect, analyze and synthesize data; very detail oriented; excellent problem solving in a timely manner; actively pursues training and educational opportunities to build knowledge, experience and skills. Responds promptly to client needs and requests, has good oral communication skills, exhibits sound judgement.
PHYSICAL DEMAND
Need good vision for daily microscopy work, may be required to lift up to 10 pounds, frequent sitting at microscope, ability to use a computer for daily activities. Intense concentration and attention to detail required for most of the daily shift.
