Job Description:

With the Chair, Chiefs of Laboratory Medicine and Anatomic Pathology, and Medical Directors the Senior Administrative Director ensures access to and delivery of high quality pathology & laboratory services consistent with patient/physician demand, in a safe, efficient and cost effective manner.

Under the general supervision of the Vice President and in collaboration with the Chair and Clinical Chiefs of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and relevant Medical Directors, the Senior Administrative Director provides leadership for continuous laboratory service and quality improvement, innovation and staff empowerment, accomplished through effective internal and external customer relations.

Administratively and operationally responsible for the entirety of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine including all services lines. The Senior Director is responsible for leadership of operational and financial performance in partnership with the Chair. Departmental responsibilities are focused primarily on the facility side, with some interaction with professional finances and the BU School of Medicine. Responsible for setting and executing on a large strategic agenda including process improvements, expansion and growth, evaluation and implementation of new technology, and day-to-day performance. The Senior Director will serve as the primary partner with the Chief/Chair and physician Medical Directors to drive strategy and performance for the Laboratory’s portfolio including BUMG, BUSM, residency program, physician recruitment, Community Health Center expansion and operations. Gathers data through best practices and collaborates with other disciplines to recommend services that will increase productivity, minimize the duplication of services, increase workflow efficiency, break down departmental barriers and provide the highest quality of care to patients.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to: the disciplines of Surgical Pathology, Intra-operative Consultation, Cytology, Aspiration Service, Immunohistochemistry, Ultrastructural studies, Image Analysis and Morphometry, Molecular Pathology, Decedent Affairs Office (including Autopsy Services), Amyloid Pathology, Hemoglobin Diagnostic Reference Laboratory, Transfusion Medicine and Tissue Dispensary, Clinical Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Point of Care Testing and support services including Phlebotomy, Central Receiving, Administration, Outreach Services, Quality and Compliance Oversight including all associated laboratory and office space (approximately 60,000 gross sq ft) and 3.5 million billable tests.

Also provides management and leadership support to multiple off site areas at affiliated Community Health Centers and other BMC sites. Management responsibilities for approximately 190 FTEs in Laboratory Medicine and 30 FTEs in Anatomic Pathology. Budget responsibility includes approximately $37 million operating budget and capital budget of ~$1-5 million.

  • A Master’s Degree in Health Care Administration, or Business Administration, or equivalent combination of education and experience is necessary.
  • At least 10 years of progressively advanced financial and administrative management experience with at least 5 years in a medical institution. Considerable and progressive administrative, operational, as well as supervisory experience in health care is necessary. Experience in a successful leadership role managing a team.
  • Seasoned health care professional with broad leadership skills normally acquired through 15+ years of related experience within a sizeable, complex provider organization. Experience working with a large physician faculty practice in an academic environment is strongly preferred
  • Substantial years of demonstrated successful leadership, ability to integrate services, administer and manage change, and provide responsive support services.
  • Extensive experience managing staff and services.
  • Excellent knowledge of accounting budgeting, principles and applications.
  • · Demonstrated business and financial acumen. Solid operational and financial skills to ensure that resources are applied in a most effective manner for achieving quality of care and service.
  • Knowledge of clinic operations and related processes.
  • Prior experience with submitting grant applications and interpreting sponsor guidelines, as well as post-award grant management is desired.
  • Experience managing data and converting it into actionable information.
  • · Strong presentation and writing skills. Creates succinct written communications and is able to simplify complex messages.
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically while remaining operationally and financially grounded.
  • Knowledge of issues related to human resources, financial, information technology, and facilities management in a large and diverse organization.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, advanced organizational skills, and a strong record of working effectively with staff in a multicultural and diverse environment.
