Job Description
Duties

The employee provides physical protection of museum property and grounds, and which enforces Institution rules regarding safety and protection of staff and visitors within the Institution's boundaries.

Typical Duties:

  • Enforces a wide variety of federal and local laws, rules and regulations.
  • Remains alert for unusual conditions and incidents.
  • Denies admission to unauthorized persons. Prevents unauthorized removal of facility property.
  • Patrols to prevent or detect and deal with break-ins and trespassers, parking lost thefts and vandalism.

Incumbent Must be able to stand and walk for long periods of time. Must be able to lift up to 50lbs. without assistance. Incumbent must be available for work on evening, weekends and holidays.

This position requires pre-employment drug screening.

This position requires annual (at a minimum) with the standard security force firearm (handguns, rifles and shot guns), OC Spray and ASP Baton. This position requires selectee(s) to be able to wear and be able to employ all issued weapons while on duty. Must obtain and maintain CPR and AED qualifications. Failure to re-qualify will result in removal from the position.

This position requires selectee(s)to undergo and pass a recurring medical examination.

Employment is subject to successful completion of a pre-employment requirements process that consists of: structured interview, drug test, medical evaluation, and background investigation.

Upon successful completion of the pre-employment requirements, a final offer of employment may be issued.

Issuance of a final offer of employment from SI is contingent upon you successfully completing all pre-employment requirements, including a structured interview, drug test, laboratory screening, medical evaluation, and background investigation.

Qualifications

Experience:

You qualify for this position if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 level in the Federal service or comparable pay band system related to the work of this position For this position general and specialized experience is defined as: 1) Following written and oral instructions of security officer rules, procedures, and methods to perform security duties; 2) Preventing theft, vandalism and crimes against persons and/or property; 3) Providing initial first responder care; and 4) Gathering statements and facts to prepare reports regarding offenses and incidents.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

A selecting official may make selections from the highest quality category (Best Category) provided no preference eligible in that category is passed over to select a non-preference eligible in that category unless the requirements of 5 U.S.C. 3317(b) or 3318(b) are satisfied.
