Scientific Communications Director (SCD)
Scope of Role:
Drives the Scientific Communications (SC) Strategy - incorporating insights, needs assessments, gap analysis and further external feedback with our clinical data to bring science to the medical community with the ultimate goal of changing medical practice
Brings core expertise in communication, scientific storytelling by leading and/or contributing to various cross-functional teams
Develops tailored content (detailed below) based on insights and subject matter expertise to meet the existing and future needs of patients and healthcare professionals (HCPs)
Delivers content in an omni-channel approach, leveraging value-based criteria to evaluate impact and drive data-driven content adjustments and channel reprioritization to achieve desired outcomes
Anticipates, evaluates and confirms disease-area market and scientific dynamics and adjusting strategies, content and channels to maximize impact and value across targeted audiences
Core responsibilities:
Strategy
SC strategy - insights driven, multi-year strategy regularly reviewed and adjusted based on market dynamics; focused on engaging the the right audience through the right channels with the right content at the right time as an integral part of the overall strategy
Scientific Narrative - story developed to simplify how we discuss our assets and bring consistency while resonating and reflecting the external world and how our science is being discussed
Insights - seek regular feedback loops to anticipate audience needs before data is available, how data was perceived to drive strategic, content and channel adjustments
Value & Impact - applies multifaceted impact parameters to all content evaluating the impact and value perceived from targeted audiences
Content
Publications - drives strategic publications direction, planning and focus of content across disease area; partners on publications development across internal and external stakeholders while leveraging agency partners to help execute on all publications; provides strategic guidance and oversight to affiliate publications activities
Medical Education - drives medical education insights, incorporating into the iSC strategy and leads education planning, content and execution in partnership with external collaborators (HCPs/societies/providers, etc.); focus on variable education channel opportunities
Training (internal) - drives content development of newest data and adjusted content to raise the levels of knowledge for all internal colleagues to ensure consistent engagement externally; incorporates various channels and insights to maximize impact
Engagement
HCPs - facilitate collaborative relationships to ensure partnership on all forms of content development to reflect the voice of the audience
Medical Societies - partner to facilitate impactful content with society membership; represent Roche in peer-to-peer exchange and collaboration
Affiliates - partner and engage regularly to assess country/regional needs; leverage to challenge current strategies and content; partner with to bring content to local HCPs
Agencies - Leads and oversees the work of agencies; expertly briefing and directing teams of writers and others to deliver consistent content, incorporate relevant insights and ensure clarity of prioritization
Professional requirements/Skills and Knowledge
Advanced life-science degree (PhD, PharmD) or MD preferred
Medical communications, medical affairs, bio-pharmaceutical industry experience as well as people leadership experience may inform level of seniority
High ethical standards - responsible for acting in line with legal, regulatory, industry and company standards and codes of practice (such as Roche Code of Conduct, publications-related standard operating procedures, and any other Roche directives)
Strategic agility and decision-making ability with functional competencies, including but not limited to organization, prioritization, negotiation and communication skills
Ability to operate successfully in a matrix environment with shared accountability and responsibilities
Fluency in written and spoken English
