Part -Time School Van Driver – NRT Bus, Inc.

An applicant for a 7D certificate must be at least 21 years of age and have had a driver's license for three (3) continuous years immediately prior to application.

Driver Job Description

NRT is dedicated to providing a superior level of special transportation services to our schools, students and communities. Critical to our success is the performance of our drivers and monitors. This job description summarizes some of the duties and responsibilities our drivers and monitors are expected to fulfill. You may be needed to perform other duties and responsibilities as the situation dictates or as assigned by your supervisor.


Essential Job Duties

  • Safely operate a motor vehicle, in accordance with all State and Federal traffic laws, while driving school-aged children.
  • Safely operate a variety of vehicles, including sedans, mini-vans, full size passenger vans, and wheelchair vans.
  • Safely assist students as needed. This includes helping them enter and exit the vehicle, using the vehicle’s lap and shoulder belts, and safely securing them in car seats and booster seats. Lifting may be required.
  • Monitor student behavior to provide appropriate guidance, feedback, and direction when necessary.
  • Report unsafe and inappropriate student behavior to management; follow directions and implement corrective steps as assigned.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively and clearly in (English) with students, parents, teachers, and Van Pool staff.
  • Must demonstrate effective interpersonal communication skills while using Van Pool’s two-way radio system.
  • Must have the physical capability to safely install car seats and booster seats.
  • Must comply with all policies and procedures as identified in the Employee Handbook, Company training sessions, and bi-weekly newsletters.
  • Must be available for both morning (5:45 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.) and afternoon (1:00 p.m. to 5:45 p.m.) routes.
  • Must have a safe and accessible location at home where the vehicle can be parked.
  • Must be able to follow written and verbal directions and instructions from supervisors.
  • Must demonstrate a willingness to work effectively with school age children with special needs.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and 7D School Pupil Transport License.
  • Must have valid driver's license for 3 years of consecutive years and an acceptable driving record.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Must pass CORI, SORI, TB, fingerprint tests, Initial and random drug screenings.

Physical Requirements

  • Pass an annual physical to obtain or renew a 7D School Pupil Transport License.
  • Be able to perform First Aid and CPR during training and during an actual emergency.
  • Be able to enter and exit the vehicle routinely, safely, and without difficulty.
  • Be able to remove snow and ice from the vehicle during the winter weather.
  • Be able to complete a pre and post trip vehicle inspection.
  • Be able to enter and exit the vehicle multiple times in order to conduct a thorough inspection for student safety.
  • Be able to assist students on and off the van in the case of an emergency. Lifting may be required.
  • Must be able to position wheelchairs and safely install and secure wheelchair restraints.
  • Must be able to manually operate the wheelchair lift when necessary.

NRT Bus Inc. was started in 1988. We provide yellow bus transportation and other related services to school districts, cities and towns throughout Eastern Massachusetts, Central Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire. Other services include: home-to-school bus transportation for students, chartered bus services for schools and other organizations (including for after school athletics, school field trips, and summer programs and camps); student transportation to out-of-district schools; transportation for students with special needs and/or medical considerations; and transportation to homeless students. We also specialize in Special Education Transportation and has developed a collaborative transportation network to help school districts deliver their children to school in the most efficient, safest and most cost-effective manner. NRT acquired Trombly Motor Coach Service, Inc. in March 2013 and has merged with Van Pool Transportation, JYL Transportation, and Salter Transportation.
